DIY painting

The front arches and the passanger side door have started to rust on my mera. I can't afford to take it to the bodyshop (I've just moved house, changed jobs and I've been saving up for motorbike lessons - the money should have went towards coilovers :scowl: )to get it fixed, so do you think I should buy some spray paint and body filler and fix it up by myself?

I reckon even if it looks a bit dodgy it's better than it rusting away?

Not much advice here I'm afraid, just an anecdote really..

I DIYed a big scrape in my last car's back bumper and panel and some rust spots and it looked fine but my attempt at doing the whole rear passenger door was a disaster (the paint went on fine but the laquer would just go all orange-peely or run in huge drips). In the end I gave up on the door and got it done professionally having wasted ££s on paint and laquer.

Maybe just DIY for now to keep it in shape and get it done later professionally if you are not hapy with the results? The filler/primer and even paint part is easy enough and will knock the cost of a pro job down if you need it later.

Have to use a spray and blend in the edges of the new paint, though, as it's night-on impossible to get an exact match on an 'weathered' car.

The side its rusting got resprayed around a year ago, they just made a complete c**t of it. I'm not too fussed about the paint matching completely. I'll get it done proffesionally eventually - once I have my motorbike license and have bought a motorbike.

just make sure you treat the rust properly, if the paint work goes tits up you can have that re-painted at a last resort.

just get it done properly your car will end up lookin like a piece of tatty shit, better to have a little bit of rust instead of highlighting it with a shit spray job that you will have to get sprayed eventually anyway

just get the work done in stages one panel at a time

I tried repairing some rust on my car, it looked good when finished etc... but after a few weeks now i can see bubbles again :doh!:
So for scratches etc... i would say have a go yourself but i wouldnt recommend sorting out the rust yourself unless you know what your doing because it could come back like on mine and all that time and work you put into the car will be a waste.
Hope this helps

better off leaving it a bit longer and getting it done by a proffesional imo, if your going to do it do it properly etc

that said you could do an amazing job yourself, i just wouldnt trust myself at all with bodywork and to me a proffesional is the best person for the job without a doubt
