Does a spoiler actually make a difference

Just tought if i may ask, as it might sound stupid do the spoilers on the GTi's or Sri's do anything performance wise or they are just for looks(decoration) as spoilers/wings are meant for aerodynamics or down force act to stabilize a vehicle's rear axel at high speeds–much faster than legal limits. :rolleyes:
 
just for looks, mine never had one when i bought it and with it fitted its no different at all even at 80/90 mph on the motorway, cant really work at all as it cant flow air underneath it and has no way of inducing downforce
 
and they're FWD, although the logics still there they're far more benficial on fast RWD cars!
 
At high speed in mine you feel the front end get lighter, but the Almera isn't the most aero dynamic object out there.
 
I have no idea on the N15 Cd but a N16 is around the same as the P10 and P11 at 0.29 (Porsche Boxster is the same). It probably has a similar frontal area to the Primera too, so not that bad aerodynamically.

I know the P10 eGT has a Cd of 0.29 and using the Fa of 21.16 sq ft (from the P10 Infiniti G20), that gives a CdA of 6.1364
Compare that to a list on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drag_coefficient

It's the same as a Acura NSX and better than a Lamborghini Diablo, and weighs about the same as a lightened NSX (NSX-R). If only it had the power too :)

I suspect the std spoiler will affect top speed slightly and the same with the rear grip at speed. Looing at it's profile though, I'd say it's mostly for cosmetics...
 
The N1 spoiler would generate some downforce (don`t know how much though), but the GTi spoiler wouldn`t generate as much, if any.
 
I thought a WING was for downforce (ie.. drift cars needing the rear pushed down) whereas a spoiler was for aerodynamics?

So I'd imagine you'd notice a difference but not really performance-wise, But mostly I think they're for asthetics.
 
thought a wing was the name given to a big spoiler? doesnt the word spoiler come from the fact that it spoils the air....downforce?
 
yeah i should imagine it would too as its in the air flow.

been told a pulsar n14 spoiler would create some downforce aswell but im not convinced.
