Drove through a biiiig puddle last night...

It was dark and I didn't see the puddle properly, went crashing through it at about 45mph, the car cut out, so I waited a few minutes and it started back up, but very roughly, sounded like it was running on 3 at times.

I thought, it would have sorted itself out by the morning, but on the way to the train station is was still very lumpy when I put my foot down more than "slightly".

Basically, what i'm wondering is: Is it just water in the leads or electrics, or have i severely damaged my engine by getting water in the intake (I have a cold air feed to the right of my passenger front fog).

Cheers,
James.

That doesn't sound very good at all. Although, the fact that it's currently so cold, especially overnight, might mean it hasn't had a chance to fully dry out, in terms of electrics that is.. I'm a novice so I'll shut up now.

You sure you didn't just plug your lambda sensor back in ? :p

Hahaha nope, lambda is still disconnected, and this is a much more violent judder, like nearly feeling it's about to cut out! :|

Water in the intake leads to Hydro-Lock (banana shaped con-rods to you and me) as water doesnt compress....it compresses other things under pressure.

Sounds like water in the dizzy cap, take it off and spray some wet-start or WD40.

A mate did the same thing pressure washing the engine of his MR2 (twat) and cleanign the cap sorted it.

personally just think its water in the intake matey!

happens alot on diesels such as rover 220's as there air intake is down to the front offside go through any kinda reasonable puddle and it floods it!

will be very lumpy to start with (after leaving ti a bit to settle so you can start it again! lol)but will cure itself once it heats up the block and recondenses (think that the word haha) itself

how deep was the puddle roughly (give a side guaging, ie, does it come up to doors etc?

at worst it will be damp around the leads etc but the standard water repellant will cure that

It was standing water, probably only a few inches at the most, it's the speed that caused the problem I think.

check your leads too, this happened on a mates car and the water gushing up and disloged the leads.
also look down the spark plug holes for any standing water down there, if there is some just suck it out with a straw.

just be careful i know what your like for getting drunk!

Make sure you take the airbox off if youve still got it on, as when i done this once, even though i checked the leads and plugs i forgot that there was a puddle of water sat under the airfilter. Caused the car to be constantly sucking damp air in and that made it run pants. (altho it was french lol)

Just an update, it was all fine when I came back to it today :)

And FYI, the puddle was probably deeper than the Mersea causeway :P

good stuff man, close call, i remember doing this in the sunny, puddle coming out from the curb, thought nothing of it, went through it and the car lost all power and spluttered. popped the bonnet and the air filter was soaking!
