ECU Learning mode

Okay seen a few posts with reference to this and wondered how it works?
Once it "learns" does it retain that unless reset by disconnecting the battery? Or does it continue to learn? Can you force it into learning mode?
Puzzled as there is no reference to this in my owners manual

AFAIK It's always learning. So if you drive your car like miss daisy for a week it's going to feel slower at the end of the week if you try to boot it, but will have better MPG. Give it some beans for a bit and it's likely it will feel more lively later on.

I think.

i could be wrong ,but i think that every ecu is the same(basic factory settings) but every engine is different. i think it's the ecu learning the best settings for the engine.it also take in to account engine wear and stuff like that, so i guess it is alway learning and that's why when you disconnect the battery, the Eco's memory gets wiped back to basic factory settings and it starts relearning.
