eeeh?

got a bit of a problem, i think my gearbox is fooked!

its making a grinding noise when still and it whines while driving now :( (dont make noise when clutch is compresed so!

please tell me if it is the box! or a nother problem

Is it like a rattly noise on idle that goes away when you press the clutch?

If so could be the release bearing, my gearbox has whined since Ive had it and had the rattly noise since Ive had it,

had a new clutch and release bearing put in and it still does it, granted not as bad but is still there.

Could be the realease bearing like Sam says.
When i bought my GTI last year it was noisey, but ONLY when you put the clutch pedal down, eventually it went through the forks and i had to drive it all the way home in 2nd lol.
I thought the GTI boxes were meant to be quite strong and could take a fair bit of punishment, and extra power with not many problems....?

a mate at work had exactly the same with his almera a few weeks ago, only thing cured it for him was a new clutch, but his had the whining noise for a few months before it became a full on grinding noise, he told me what it was but i wasnt listening, i'll ask him what it was next time i see him.

dunno if it makes a difference but his is a 1.6

The clutch realese bearing rattles when you press the clutch in, this is when its under most load....so this isn`t your problem. Its a problem with the actual gearbox bearings. Rebuild or 2nd hand unit i`m afraid.

2nd hand gearbox will be best, rebuild costs can spiral, just try breakeryard or 247spares for a GA14DE gearbox.
