Hi,

When the car is turned on I hear a noise from the engine which increases with more throttle.

I'm no expert but it does sound like a chain.

My car is an Almera 1.4Si N15 and has done 97KMiles.

Your engine is chain driven, so will be chain rattle change the enigine oil for starters! Your chain tensioner my have gone also!

you need to get that sorted really as when they start to rattle it usually means its about to go due to either the chain gettin worn and goin to snap or like garnz said the tensioner which will also lead to snapping. if that happens to can safely say its fucked. so get it replaced soon as. it is probably due a new one anyway

Cheers for the advice.

Do you know roughly how much this will cost ?

*braces for bad news*

Tensioners are relatively cheap I think (don't know exact prices), but replacing the timing chain is more hassle than it's worth, might as well buy a new car or put a new engine in

I think Rowdy GTi said you might as well replace the tensioner anyway, as you need a new tensioner if you replace the chain.

My Micras chain rattled for at least 10,000 miles and it never snapped, and anyone that knows it will know how loud the rattle was too!

The one on my Almera has started to rattle a bit but i'm not fussed :)

the chain is really the same as a belt it does stretch and ware just takes longer. it is any easy fix for a mechanic. its probably due for renewin now anyway. take it to a garage and see what they say but do it soon

Took the car to the garage today, the fella said don't worry about it yet it's normal (the noise). He told me he has heard the noise much much louder.

Today I also got a quote from a Nissan dealer they said it's gonna cost more than the car, and that it would be better to buy a new one! ! !

He quoted me £700 to do the job. :rasp:

my car/s ratlled when i got them one had 40,000 and the other had 70,000 now has 86,000 no change what so ever,

i heard the chain doesnt need changing until it reaches about 140,000 any way

just use good oil and service regulary and you should be al rite

700 quid from a nissan dealer! others have been quoted 1200 from nissan in the past.

i was under the impression the chains will last a lot lot longer than 140k miles if looked after properly.

do the cheapest repair first, the tensioner :)

if its anything to be serious then it will probably be your tensioner on one of its last teeth. The tensioner ratchet's along to compensate for chain wear/the chain stretching. If the tensioner is at the end it can't ratchet along anymore, meaning it has to rely on oil pressure alone to tension the belt.

At 97k the timing chain should be fine, it should in reality (but not always) last longer than the car itself. I would check oil level's etc first.

hope this help's mate!

before you think its a chain check your exhaust heat shields around the manifold area as they 'can' sound very similar when loose ;)

ikes!! Mine must be on 140k now surely, will have to work out what it is when I get home.

£700+?? Surely its cheaper to get a new engine block in!

I'm saving for a new car anyhoo haha

it wont matter mate, chances of the chain going at any mileage are slim, pretty sure most of the primeras that snap are p11-144's and a few of them went at silly low mileages anyway, no point spending money having it done on the off chance that it "may" go at some point, especially when as you said an engine is so much cheaper.

change the oil regularly and thats the only maintenance these engines seem to need, obviously do the normal service items every year etc but it would seem stupid to do much more when they dont need it.
