Engine cut-out - help needed!!

I've got an 02 petrol 1.8 SE saloon with issues. Heading on the motorway last weekend the engine died, no revs, engine fault light up. AA patrol diagnosed low output from the alternator! charged the battery! headed home and after 5 miles it happened again. Had a new alternator fitted, drove for about 10 miles, same issue. Waited 5-10 mins, car turned over and lasted another 2 miles. Waited again, lasted about 10 miles. Just had a new battery fitted, this time it lasted 21 miles before dying again. Waited 10 mins, started fine and got me home.

I don't have a code scanner to read the code but will hopefully find out this PM (mate has one).

Anyone any ideas?? I'm not mechanically-minded so don't know. Could this be a fuel pump issue? Any advice gratefully received.

Cheers, Nick

Sounds a lot like when my fuel pump was overheating causing it to cut out, how much fuel have you got in the tank at the time? Below 1/4 of a tank?

Any idea how I can check? Will the OBD post an appropriate code? As I said, I don't do mechanics and don't really want to go down the line of shelling out a shed load to the local garage if not necessary!!

Rowdy beat me to it, mine was just trial and error, theres only so many things it can be if you're not getting any warning lights

Thanks guys. Just had the codes read, P0335 and P0335 Pending, which apparently is crank sensor but may also point to an issue with the timing chain? Car has just clocked 67k miles - should the timing chain be out by this stage of its life? Any ideas what the £££ might be for either the sensor or timing chain? I know the timing chain may well be more thsn the motor is worth...

Well, it turned out (hopefully...) to be the camshaft sensor. Just taken it for a decent run and all seems to be okay. Picked it up from the garage and the bloody airbag warning light was back on, but managed to reset that okay with the ignition key trickery. Looking forward to another few trouble-free years out of the old girl now!!!
