Front wing removal info needed.

Hey guys, more bodywork info needed. :O

With all the talk about replacing wings lately, there doesn`t seem to be anything saying how to actually do it.

What I need to know is how easy/what`s involved in removing the front wings?

I`ve searched, but nowt relavent has come up. :(

I was gonna start tackling the rust on my drivers side wing tomorrow, but think it`d be easier to actually remove the wing, instead of doing it `in situ`, so want to be sure I`m not gonna wreck it before I start.

So, apart from the bolt at the bottom of the door & the ones on the lip in the engine bay, are there any more hidden anywhere, & is there any stikaflex type stuff or spot welds anywhere?

I seem to remember a pic of a red GTi minus a wing on here a while ago, but can`t remember whos it was. :O

Thanks.

iirc the bolts underneath the bonnet, 1 underneath on the sill and behind the indicator.......

I think

JME GTI had his trackmera ina pic without the wing on it.

Its pretty easy to remove one, i've done one. You've got the 3 or 4 bolts on the lip in the engine bay and the one at the bottom by the door which you've said, also theres a bolt behind the side repeater which you need to remove the arch liner to get to, then you've got to remove the bumper and indicator, and theres a couple of bolts that go through the front of the wing into the headlight. I think thats about it, there may be one or two more at the front but there not hidden, when i did mine it took me bout 5mins to take it off, thats including taking the bumper and indicators out aswell. hope that helps

Cheers Sam, that`s the one!

Hopefully get it all sorted tomorrow. :D

Edit: Thanks Andy, that`s exactly why I asked, would never have thought to look for one behind the repeater. :thumb:

no problem, give you a good chance to clean inside the wing when you take it off, its amazing how much crap gets stuck in there.

haha, that`s a nice little bonus! :D

One of my neighbors commented last weekend when I was doing the rear arches: "You`re ALWAYS doing SOMETHING to that car! I bet it`s in better nick now than it was when it left the factory!".

Well, that`s the whole point of me having it, the exclusivity of it, it`s a modern classic, so needs to be looked after properly!

Very few people understand that, unfortunately, & just see it as `a car`! :(

Mine never had one behind the side repeater?, theres 2 bolts underneath where the wing wraps under the sill, another one on the bottom but you pull the arch liner back to get to it, another bolt that can be seen at the top, when you open the door, it hiding behind the door rubber though. Then theres the ones along the top in the engine bay, 2 bolts into the headlamp and one onto the bumper support i think?

Cov`s right, but there`s also 2 nuts below the indicator, that hold it onto the bar that goes below the headlights, & it`s a right arse to remove & refit it to said bar! (got to swing it 90 degrees & twist it about to get the fooker unhooked!)

Got it sorted today, wasn`t feeling at all well, but was bored out of my head, so decided to do it, in between the rain, as it was summat to do.

Sheared both sill bolts, so it`s only got one holding it on now, & the top lip one nearest the windscreen!

Pics are currently uploading, so will be posted asap. :)

Wouldnt worry about it fred, the 2 bottom ones underneath by the sill were so coroded on mine that the bolt head didnt even have flat edges lol, cue drilling the head off :) Replaced with coated bolts

OK piccy time!

The red circles in this pic show where the 2 nuts connect the wing to the crossbeam below the indicator, the yellow square is the TINY gap you have to feed the front bracket through to get it on or off!

Also, note Kelvs undersealing skills from a few years back! (for those newer members who may not be aware, this used to be K33 ELV) :D

It`s nowhere near as good a job as the rears, as I was not well, & had to keep shooting indoors :( but at least the rust has been dealt with!
