:) Hi All. Just registered after buying an N15 GTi 1997 in Black. Very happy with my purchase. Needs a bit of TLC but didnt pay much for it.

This seemed the obvious place to ask advice about my car. I'm ok on basic stuff, but no experience with 'Mods' n stuff. Don't want to 'boy racer' it too much (I'm a bit old for that) but want it looking nice and going fast.

First question ! I want to upgrade the speaker system. Does anyone know the exact specs I need to replace original front and rear speakers ? Rears look like Clarion round (5 or 6 inch ?), front are oval shaped. Also do you have to take off door panels to get to the front ones ? Seems so to me.

Polishing ! Can I use T-cut on this Nissan black ? Bottle says suitable for normal and mettallic paint. Are some of these cars 'laquered' so you cant use it ?

If anyone knows a GTi pre -98 old shape being broken up, I could do with a couple of bits.

Cheers for any advice, I'm sure I will have lots more questions later.

Regards

Thanks BABA Thanks Matt. This looks like the place to be !!!!!!!!

You cant just swap the fronts as they are a weird shape mounted on a metal plate. You will have to knock up an MDF spacer to fit aftermarket ones.

The rears you can just swap, I have some Vibes in the back of mine however i have completely forgotten what size they are! I'm sure if you took ones out you could measure it. Maybe 5.25 or 6.5". Dont trust me on that.

The fronts can take 6.5" ones off the top of my head, however you could make anything fit as you have to make the spacer.

Bit of a trek from Southampton m8 ! But thanks for the invite !

Oh Crap ! Didnt want to have to muck about with modding the door ! Most people say front speakers are most important to upgrade in order to get decent sounds. Gonna have to have a go ! If anyone has hints n tips I'd be grateful. Cheers Hally

I fitted 16cm speakers in the front of mine just template the speaker on the mesh stuff on the door and snip the plastic away and get bolts and washers to attach it to the plastic, it is strong enough to hold the speakers and this way you can actually see the new ones not perfect but does the job and looks great.

What I did with mine was just drill one extra hole and then secure the speakers by 2 out of the 4 mounting points. The standard screw holes are an odd configuration (3 holes in a triangle shape i think?) so by drilling an extra one I could line up an aftermarket speaker a bit better. Its probably not the best for bass etc as they could be mounted better, but they dont rattle or anything.

Im sure I just took mine out, then fitted the new ones. The 1's I fitted in mine im sure they were just 17cm Alpine speakers, as far as I know they were, I took out the old 1's and just screwed the new 1's in pretty much straight away, cannit really remember me and a mate fitted all my sound system I'll ask him lol, the back speakers were bigger, but fitted just the same with a bigger speaker. Take off the cover and measure them and get a match, shouldnt be too hard! lol...

hows it goin mate, welcome to aoc, dont use t-cut that regularly as it has a tendency of taking of the paint, use wax or autoglym polish, thats what i use and it comes out really really well on a black car!!

enjoy the forums!

Front door speakers

Thanks for all the advise guys (I presume !!). I will have a look at the speakers this weekend and let you know how I get on. Why did Nissan have to make stupid shape speakers and fittings for front doors ?

I assume you have to remove the entire door panel, as the speaker grill seems part of the door cover ! mmmmmmmm can't wait. Why can't things be easy ?
