Grinding noise at 3k RPM

Yet more problems (i'm starting to doubt Nissan's reliability...) have made themselves evident.

It only started doing this a few days ago but it sounds quite severe. In 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th (not 5th though...) a loud grinding noise becomes apparant between 3k and 3.5k revs. The cars done 125k miles and i don't think she's ever had a new clutch.

Thoughts? The gearbox isn't leaking and seems fine. I thought some sort of clutch bearing?

If the noise stops when the press the clutch down it`ll be a gearbox bearing.......if it get worse it`ll be the release bearing.

Could also be driveshaft issues.

The noise goes away with the clutch pedal depressed.

I'm guessing it's a big job if it's gearbox related...

Update: Gearbox bearing has gone, been quoted £400 to fix it!

Coupled with needing new rear shocks and CV joints, it looks like the Mera will be scraped.

just get a new gearbox mate, far cheaper, check ebay theres a new one on ebay still i think?

or ive got a box from a 1.6 sunny :)
