gti rear axle conversion

sorry for all the questions but needs must, i have searched but couldnt find anything,
now the question ive got a p1 sri, but ive been told that i dont need the rear axle off a gti, just the calipers, hubs etc,
but surley the back plate from the drum brake is integral to the axle right, has any one done this conversion if so i need your info, cheers ian.

you CANNOT fit discs straight onto a non disc axle. the whole beam is different.

you can however buy adapter plates on QG18 forum that will allow you to do the conversion without swapping axles.

cheaper just to swap the axle though in fairness... its only 5 bolts

to be honest mate thats what i thought, but i thought id just double check, cheers mate

The rear axle isn't actually that heavy once you've got it off and got the brakes etc off.
You can easily carry it on your own.
I didn't bother putting mine on because the brakes are satisfactory with the GTi setup up front, with good discs, pads, brake lines and DOT 5.1 fluid.

You know its an old thread when you see Joe posting. :(

Joe has done a few track days with his rear drums. No issues.

thought id revive it lol im quite interested in the conversion but if my 1.4 drums are sufficient enuf to stop the sr20de without any failing then ill leave it at that and renew the shoes and cylinders, so gti front calipers will these fit directly to the 1.4 front hub knuckle (doofer thingimebob)? sorry that got technical lol

Most braking comes from the front. The ad22vf ( gti calipers ) is a great conversion. Direct fit. Just need discs and pads. Use braided hoses and DOT5.1 for a better feel.

I ran my SR'd Si with full GA setup. Ran fine but was a little scary under breaking. A Gti front brake upgrade would be fine. Plus you can do better handbrake turns with drums!

Used to see alot of the Novas with 2.0L conversions just running bigger calipers up front and with the standard drums on the back

well you guys talked me into it gti brake upgrade on front and drums at rear
cheers for the info and advice guys much aprieciated
