GTi Wheel Powder Coating

I am considering getting my GTi wheels powder coated matt black like Andys. Ive been quoted £200 which is significantly less than another company and includes all the fiddly stuff with tyres and valves. Just wondering what your opinions are on whether or not it would look good. I know there are quite a few ppl on here that have black GTi rims and they look the canines gonads. Hopefully the link below will show you a wee pic of my car to let you know how she looks in her current state.

Link does not work mate..
Plus £200 is very expensive I think..
Sand/shot blasting is roughly £5 per wheel and powder coating is between £5 and £10 per wheel..
If you're in the know.

i was around £40 a wheel powdercoated, plus around £50 to get the new tyres fitted

so just under £200

the guy at the powder coaters got me to go for the matt as the gloss shows up any little scratches, and it's a bit shiney for me.

for black fella i'd do it yourself, especially if your on a budget with no spare wheels whilst yours are away. Practice on your spare and if’ you muck it up then get them done by a specialist.

I did mine myself, first time round the colour came out wrong as I had brought Citroen metor grey, which turned out to be blue eek. The I flatted them dowm again n blew them in graphite grey :)

Hope you don’t mind the pictures

^ they look fantastic, there must have been loads and loads of prep work involved in that. Did you sand the surface down. Id love to give it a blast myself but just afraid of making a complete balls of it. Ill try the link to the pic again to see if it works this time.

Right, Im going to bite the bullet and this a go myself tomorrow. Any tips? Ive heard sand down with 320 grit initially, then 800 grit. 3-4 layers of primer with drying time in between, then 3-4 coats of colour, followed by a couple of coats of laquer. Does that sound right to anybody?

You've got it mate ;) Do the spraying in short bursts, side to side, keeping an even distance from the wheel, and let it harden before making any changes or adding another coat. Thin coats will dry quicker without any runs etc.

yeah that sounds about right chap. curved motions always, never start/stop on the alloy itself - its not hard. you taking the tyres off or masking them off around fully? have you got a space heater, if possible between coats stand em up in front of that 10inches away to aid drying and baking. like

practice on the spare first tho :)

Ill be masking the tyres off probably. I was going to get them done by a powdercoaters but it would involve numerous trips (spare wheel restriction). I have a few days off work so thought, what the hell, ill give it a bash myself. Thanks for the tip on not starting/finishing on the alloy itself. Is there any special consideration that needs to be given to the paint used or can you just spray the wheel as you would a fibreglass splitter for example?

If you find that the tape isn’t sticking to the tyres, I found a bit of petrol on a rag cleans off all the old grease and dirt helping the tape to stick better. Don’t need no special paint, scotching the surface area fully and the primer do the hard work, the rest is easy. The destructions on the can will tell all. Are you doing he inside of the wheel too, I haven’t. If you do tho, do the inside first then the front of the alloy after.
