Im wanting to swap the head unit in my almera,
Question, does the trim have to be removed, and if so how?
cheers
Sam

more than likely yes, but dead easy

remove ash tray

below radio 2 cross head screws

pull trim from bottom, 4 clips holding it in place

once pulled out unplug the switches

should take no longer than 5 minutes

i didnt have to remove the trim or anything. i didnt want to keep the old one so i used a screwdriver on it. After that i had to buy an adapter from halfrauds to link the existing wireing to the new headunit then with a bit of wangling, oh an a cage to fit it snuggly. it went in with no problems, just dont forget to put the aerial in before u put it all back in otherwise youl be effin and jeffin trying to get it out again.

Let me know how it goes Sam, I'm gonna do the same in the next few days. I also asked about changing speakers.... no replies yet. Good luck with the install.

speakers are very easy. just remove the existing ones, make the holes bigger if needed either using a jigsaw or juniour saw:P
then put the new ones in and reconnect to the existing wires.( you may have to cut of the connectors on the original wireing and put something that will link up to your speakers. or just wrap the wire around instead :D

Replace the front speakers for a good quality one of the same size to avoid any messing around. And please god DO NOT just wrap the cable around the connector, or use insulation tape, or sellotape or masking tape. it WILL fall off an then you'll have to take the door off again to fix it. Buy a multi-pack of connectors (about a fiver).

Have you replaced front door speakers Damo ? Were they the oval shaped ones ?

I have infinity 5.25 inch components. Speaker is a straight swap and the crossover sits in the door pocket, while the tweeter is just below the wing mirror on the top of the door card.

Done an Dusted

Was very simple,
Took out ashtray, removed screws, pulled n pop, front came off,
Four clips 2 top 2 bottom,
Two brackets screwed onto the side of the old head unit,
unscrewed them, straight onto my new headunit no problem,
Attached all the wiring, only needed one adapter for the Aerial wire £3,
All the other plugs went in no problem no adapters,
Only thing thats niggled me is the black metal trim plate,
Have an Alpine 9853R, the front swings down and the trim plate wont go over the hinge piece, Not a problem, just a bother,
Love how everything is modular,
unscrew remove,
Simple.

Cool, hope my DIY job goes as well as yours did, thanks for the tips. Are you gonna upgrade your std speakers ? If so let me know, hope to do mine soon. Apparently the front ones are a Bitch !

My speakers had been done by a previous owner,
Id no experience at all, with speaker installs,
but was fairly straight foward on my previous renault,
Just make sure you get the correct size,
had a mate that bought speakers smaller than the standard door ones,
Dont ask why, hes a muppet

the only problem with the front ones is you'll have to make a spacer, because the originals are weird little things with 3 bolts holing them to the door. Most speakers are 4 bolt, so with a bit of MDF, a drill and a jigsaw you can make a spacer to convert from 3 to 4 bolts. Also, I wouldn't reccomend getting bigger than 13cm speakers up front, as you may have issues with the magnet being a bit big on some speakers.

Smaller speakers aren't always worse. It depends what sound you're going for. The originals are 4x6" with a massive circular flange around the outside. They're pretty weird things.

Thanks for the advice m8. I take it you mean make an mdf frame that the speaker will sit into, with 4 holes to screw on speaker, then 3 holes to hold it onto the original door holes ? Is this correct ? So I would use 7 screw in total.

yeah. use the 3 original ones the hold the MDF to the door, then use whatever comes with the speakers to attach them to the MDF.

Guys,

How do i get the tweeters out of the gti?
I've had a bit of a play but don't wana pull too hard unless i'm doing something wrong and snap something.
