Hello there!

I own a Y-reg Almera 1.5S, which I've had for three years now. Originally it was going to be my wife's car, but my old car suffered a cambelt failure just before Christmas and we needed a replacement so I could get to work. I test-drove a 1.8 Sport the same day I bought my car, but there were a few things wrong with it (tyres, evidence of a leak into the boot), plus it was a three-door and not practical enough for a family man-to-be, so I settled for a 1.5. So far it's 100% as Nissan intended and is proving to be an extremely reliable car (touch wood) and a pleasure to own, but one day I just might get to make some changes...

TTFN,

Simon

Welcome to the club Simon.

Have you had any problems with the gearbox  as the early (Phase 1) N16 `boxes have a design fault, with the filler plug being in the wrong position, that causes them to self-destruct @ (I think) about 60 thousand miles.

Please get yours seen to asap, as some members have had theirs go BANG!

EDIT: this is the thread you need, post 14 has the explanation about the gearbox design fault.

Thanks for the heads up on that one - the car has done around 55k so far with now problems, but from what you've told me it could run into problems any time now.

When you say in the wrong place, I assume this means the gearbox oil isn't at the correct level (too low?) which is why there can be problems. If anyone has any more information on this, I'd very much appreciate it - I've not found anything so far on the forum, but I will keep looking.

Presumably Nissan are aware of the potential problem, does this mean they would have instructed their dealers to do anything about it? I've had the car dealer serviced since I bought it but nothing was ever mentioned about a gearbox problem.

Glad to be of asistance.

The filler plug is 1 inch too low, so the main bearing doesn`t get enough lubrication & starts to eat itself, thus throwing the main shaft out of alignment & causing the gears to jam on themselves, thus causing them to exit through the gearbox casing!

The car in the link is a W reg, but as yours is a Y reg, it may well have the redesigned gearbox on it, but I`d deffinately get it checked, just in case yours is an early model that`s been registered later.
