Hello new here and joined as I wanted to ask advice. I have an Almera DCI (2.2) and it has lost power with more than normal white smoke when driving. I first thought turbo or intercooler (which it might be) but at the same time the radio has gone haywire. It will turn on then it wont. Or you cannot control the volume. I am just wondering if they can be linked somehow. Some kind of electrical problem ??

Any help greatly appreciated

When you say the radio wont turn on, does it display any error messages ect or just doesnt power up?

I doubt that they're connected as white smoke is generally coolant/water burning off and just for reference blue smoke is oil burning and black smoke would indicate over fuelling

The radio which has always worked suddenly has started to act weird. It will sometimes turn on other times it wont turn off or the volume wont work. Or the fan (on same facia as radio) wont work. This has all just started at the same time as the running problems. Not noticed any error messages or lights or anything

in regard to radio/fans sounds like you have a short in the wiring somewhere, take radio out and check wires are fully engaged into connectors and check for melted/cut wires

Yeah good idea, bet it would take some removing as its all part of the facia (stupid idea) one part of the car I have always hated is the stupid control panel which controls radio, heating etc etc.... who's 'great' idea was that. What was wrong with having separate controls like we always had before. Its its not broken don't fix it.

But I am still wondering if the radio going funny could be somehow connected to loss of power (short somewhere) just clutching at straws as its weird both happening together but they could be un-related

I remember years ago I had a Primera that started to run bad and we drained the water from the fuel filter somehow. Can this be done on the Almera ??

If so how ?

OK just an update in case anyone searches and finds this thread. The problem turned out to be a broken turbo and the repair cost...........

£1200

Not yet but we will... why is that to much ?

The garage is local but they are usually good and honest. They said they could not get a copy turbo after phoning all over the place. so had to buy an original for around £600 the labour was around the £300 mark (plus vat). I did seriously consider doing it myself as I have repaired my Nissan 200sx (now sold) loads of times but I was unsure of Diesel cars and I would have no were to do the repair, its raining ALL the time and we need the car as we live in small village with no bus service. On top of that my tools are mostly knackered so I would have to buy new tools.

I do have an old turbo in my shed off the 200 but they said that would not fit either

Whee is the other 240 quid from?

360 seems a bit steep, I've not worked on them but they're mounted at the front and look easy enough to work on.

I probably have my maths wrong but the labour I am sure was around the £300 mark and there was £200 vat on the total. But the actual turbo itself was the major part of the cost. I have looked online and they are expensive but the garage said the Almera I have is fairly rare so hard to find copy parts and he said he did not recommend a re-con turbo as he has seen so many fail in a short time

Well for a start you can an upgraded hybrid Turbo with none of the weaknesses of stock ones for quite a bit less than 600, that's from Turbo Technics too so not some back street dodgy stuff.

Regarding fitting, edk on here will be able to walk you through it as he has done it a couple of times. So I reckon you can more than half that bill!

Thanks for that, something to remember but the work is nearly done now so not much I can do about it now.I did search online for a turbo but found none much cheaper than I was quoted but forgot to search on this forum. So how much is the turbo from the Turbo Technics for the Almera DCI

I will keep the car and sell it as I am sick of the parts prices. I always get pattern parts but with this I always get ' Ohh not many of those around' so no pattern parts. Had a wheel bearing go recently and the housing the wheel bearing sits in had also gone and no patten part so that was expensive to.

If I sold this before fixed it would be scrap value so when fixed I should get my money back at least

Oh my. Such a shame you didn't come to us first. Like Hally says that bill could have been halved.

dont sell just cos of repair costs, if you like the car keep it and from now on consult tha aoc for parts advice, a wealth of knowledge is available on here. will save your a LOT of money being a full active member and you will have a good time as well

Thanks... I will certainly come back here in the future if I need any more repairs

OK just a slight update I was quoted £1200 from the garage and it actually came to £1095 so still a fortune but saved a few £££ (the actual turbo was £700) That is also good karma for the garage as they could have easily just said the £1200 and I would not have know any different. Plus its had an oil and filter change so that's the better part of £50.

Plus side it drives better than its ever done, it just wants to be away..... always was fast but it feels very nippy now... loads of torque

I had complete hubs available for probably a 1/4 of what you paid for that!!

You should always try the owners club for parts, we know a lot more than you're local motorfactors and probably even Nissan themselves!

Yeah I know I should have checked here, not sure why I did not a I have been a member of the SXOC for years and done plenty of work on that car with parts from the club... mind block or something.

But the money I mentioned above was for the new turbo not the wheel bearing
