Hello!

Hey guys, I'm alcoholicmonkey, have a 1997 P-reg almera.

I was actually looking for info on oil for the almera - deciding between 05W30 and 10W30... or 05W40 and 10W40.

Last year we had fully synthetic oil, but semi-synthetic the year before that. Can't say I noticed any difference... is there any benefit? I know the synthetic has supposedly better "shear" resistance... not sure what else.

If anyone wants to help out that'd be great! I looked under the "How to" bit but there wasn't a single thread there!!

Anyhow, nice to meet you all and glad there's an owners club for us :D

Welcome to the forum.:thumb:
Dont know much about oil myself, but a high quality 10/40w Semi Synthetic is fine. Go for a fully synthetic if you want 'the best' protection though.

Also, there are many threads in the 'how to' and other technical sections, its just they are reserved for payed up members.

What Almera do you drive? Be sure to post some pics up.

Hey Dale - ahhh I thought "members only" meant we had to register! I have a haynes manual but may look at being paid up some time in the future if it looks worth it

It's an equation 1.4i... nothing special really! :O

Semi-synthetic mobil1 oil is £25 at kwikfit for 10W40 - how's that sound, I mean is there a huge advantage on a vehicle this age for going fully synthetic?

Cool... apparently Mobil 1 oil is "years ahead" but I can't figure out how... I'm impressed it's cheaper than buying 5 litres at the garage though!!

(I'm getting the oil and filter change done at kwik fit as I had oil running down my sleeve when I tried to do it myself, don't laugh it was my first time :))

Welcome to the AOC mate. :)

You say your 1.4 is "nothing special", so checkout Dales 1.4 in `members rides` for some inspiration & get ready to be amazed!

If you like what you see there, you definately need to become a full member, as there are SERIOUS amounts of cash to be saved when you are. :D

I had oil running down my sleeve when I tried to do it myself,

haha, i remember doing that as well!! no harm in trying it yourself lad!! first time will always be a bit difficult but it does get easier!!

welcome to the aoc mate, as almera guy said, if you pay up and become a member there is lots and lots of info to be had and lots and lots of cash to be saved!!

I need to make a confession - I've never modded a car before...

Dale's almera is impressive... mine's nothing like that. Sadly some buffoon dented the front nearside wing directly above the wheel arch in tesco car park a few months ago... then our garage door decided to collapse and fall on the bonnet, leaving a gouge mark and denting the wing on the other side.

The rear tailgate has rust around the windscreen thanks to the idiot nissan dealers who slit the paint when replacing the rear screen under warranty. They were useless and are now unsurprisingly out of business.

It's also failed the MOT for corrosion under both sills (but repaired fairly easily)... so I don't reckon it's worth doing much as pretty much every side you look at it, there's either a dent to be seen or a trace of rust poking through from underneath. I'd have to replace both front wings, the bonnet and tailgate before even addressing the rear offside rust poking from the wheelarch.

<cries>

best bet would be to try a local scrappy for the parts, could be lucky and find a rear damaged almera that you could take the parts off, or else now and again an almera comes up for breaking on this site as well. what colour is it? and any pics of the damage/the car itself? post 'em up in the members rides section

As Dub says, checkout the `For Sale` section, as there is at least 1 N15 currently being stripped, so grab the parts you need before they`re snapped up. ;)

i see i'm not the only one to have a problem with oil lol

i remember filling mine up for a 120 mile trip and poured it in no problem, hands were clean.

got someone there to check the car over only to find i left the oil cap off and amazingly it stayed there and with quite a bit of oil over the engine lol silly me :(
