Help Fitting Standard Filter

As my insurance company won't let me have the K&N one that the GTi came with, I had got hold of a second hand standard filter & airbox, Sadly I have no idea how it fits, was hoping it would be in the haynes manual I brought but it doesn't cover the GTI :( , was hoping someone could tell me how it fits or show me photos of the standard engine bay so I can see ho it goes together....

Or if there is a how to I would be tempted to join

Thanks

Duncan

This is a PDF from K&N's website showing you how to fit the induction kit, so maybe it will help if you kind of reverse the steps??

Thanks Rach your a star!!!, I seem to have more parts to go in, than are in the pic to be removed  ...

Will giv eit a go this afternoon

Another fair sized plastic bit looks like a resonating chamber (had one on my saxo VTR) but cant see anywhere where it will fit aswell as the airbox  ,& I have a piece of rubber tubing , & I think I might be missing a piece of pipe that goes from the air box to the cold air inlet, will have a proper look this afternoon (finish work at 2.30 :D ), I'm visiting a Nissan garage anyway for a few parts so may see if they print me of some exploded diagrams of how it all fits together.... & if its not too much I might just buy a new airbox!!

Why cant anything ever be simple

P.S. Rach you done the wiper mod yet, put the punto rear wiper on mine yesterday & it looks loads better :)

Hmm, bit weird. Yeah asking Nissan for piccys seems like the best idea!

Nah haven't got round to doing the wiper mod yet...just haven't had time  really want to do it soon though - sick of the back windscreen having a big stripe across it where the wiper misses! Is there a bit of the motor you have to swap to get it to move up first rather than down?

Rach

awesome thanks for that :) yeah keep meaning to send my cash off to become a full member, I'm just not very organised...still haven't sent my mate's birthday present off from a month ago

if its that easy a job, I really have no excuse do I?! lol the rear wiper looks shite too with all the paint peeling off :P

Rach

Yeah mine was the same punto is really nice looks a lot sleeker, just have to drill the hole a bit bigger on the punto wiper I use a 9 mm drill bit then a bit of anger release to wedge it on ;), not sure how easy it will be to take back off this afternoon when I attempt the relocation :( , Just got to get some flat wipers for the front & that'll be all the subtle mods finished...

Just need to concentrate on the paint work after that

p.s. at least you buy your mates presents, I normally don't even remeber its there b day  , I only remember the G friends as its in my calender at work  .....

I didn't but if i crash it will void the insurance and I personally don't think its worth the risk, plus they would not insure my with an induction kit or performance filter fitted on the car, & to be honest it a bit too loud what with this and the Janspeed full system

yeah I knew you had to bore the hole out a bit more. Sounds like the subtle mods are going well! What are those flat wipers called again? I can never remember the name...they're the ones that are on new mercs and bmw's yeah?

I know I remember to buy them, but I'm just so crap at sending them off that people think I didn't by them one in the first place :P got a terrible memory, me and my b/f decided to move our anniversay thingy to bonfire night instead of it being a random day in november so we'd remember it lol

How's the fitting of the airbox going?

Rach

Hey scoobysn7x,

I did this reverse mod today, the guy I bought the car off had fitted his own aftermarket filter, but gave me the nissan parts he took out.

I had these parts:

1 Top Left: Bottom of air box
2 Top Right: Top of air box (with panel filter)
3 Middle: Pre-filter resonance chamber
4 Bottom Left: Intake
5 Bottom Right: Post-filter resonance chamber.

I'll try to get some pictures of it in-situ tomorrow for you, but basically what I did was the following:

-Took out the aftermarket filter
-Took out the air channelling hoses, cables ties etc
-Jacked up the front left wheel, and took off the roadwheel and removed part of the mudguard forward of the wheel, so that i could get to the cavity underneath the chassis.
-This cavity is where the pre-filter res. chamber goes, with the little intake at the top through the hole in the chassis.

-Then I unclipped the air hoes to the throttle body so that I could get the post filter res. Chamber in, this goes again underneath the flow of air, you'll see in the pics.

-Then I put the lower air box in, screwed down and put the top back on.
-Had a fiddle around refitting the air hose to the engine and top of air box (that bloody air con pipe is a pain in the arse).

-plug in the intake pipe then, to both the air box and lower/pre Res chamber.

-put the mudguard back, and the wheel.

and that's what my system is like at the moment (sorry, not quite as basic as i'd intended), I'm fairly confident that's how it should be.

ONE QUESTION I DO HAVE for people with OEM air filters is, "Is the air intake really behind the headlight?, Does it not poke out into the oncoming air at all...?"

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks Mike thats great, went to the Nissan Dealer in Glasgow yesterday & he very kindly printed me off the exploded veiw of the air box assembly :) , but your instructions really help..... I'm lucky in that the bit in the wing is still there so I only need to fit the intake the filter box & the Post-filter resonance chamber.

Only problem is I'm missing the Intake pipe :( so looks like its back to the Nissan dealers today to order it, & I'm missing most of the screws too, so will have to order them too :( ......

Rach, I think there called flat wipers ;) well thats what I searched under on ebay cost about £14 plus the postage, I had them on my focus & they were very good a lot better than the standard wipers and they look nicer too!!.

Managed to do the wiper relocation yesterday too :D was really easy only took 10 minutes......

As I need to order some parts to refit the standard filter it'll be next week before its all sorted.... so you'll have to wait a bit longer for the K&N (Sorry)
