Hi,

My brother has just bought a 99 Phase 2 GTi, and I have spent most of the day installing a new head unit (Nightmare with the wiring,.. but got there) Anyhow finished the install and everything seems ok .. The stereo works fine, turns off with the ignition etc.

The problem is; we now have no dash light, fog lights or head lamp warning buzzer. I’ve checked all the fuses and they are fine so I presume that I have pulled out a connector somewhere while installing the stereo. But I can’t for the life of me find out where.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks

Dave

Edit: I have tried removing the head unit. It makes no differance.

hello mate try taking out the stero and just connecting the main 3 wires (live, neg and ill) and then see if the prob is still there.

if you still aint fixed it put it back as it was and deny all knowledge hehe

Once installed the stereo worked perfectly, thats not the problem. Its the lights which are..... And yeah my first thought too .. But he knows about it now :(

I’ve just also discovered that the rear lights aren’t working either. This has to be a fuse but I have tested everyone in the box and those near the battery, they are all fine... so I’m totally confused.

I guess it could also be a bad earth. Anyone know this circuit is grounded?

check all the cables going into the back of the 3 switches above the HU, you might have accidently pushed one out when pushin the HU in...

I had similar problem with mine, When I turned the lights on the stereo turned off. This was due to how the headunit earths (with alpine anyway) the iso adapter doesnt have an earth on it but it goes through the chasis, Either use the bolt on plates that are standard which it'll earth through or run a cable to somewhere on the chasis.

Appreciate this might not be the problem but you never know.

i forgot about that sorry.
yeah i run a new earth wire to the plate running down the back of the dash cos when i first did it the earth did not work well enough thus no music

I scanned this pic below in for someone else previously from the Haynes manual. There is a fuse that does the 'Tail Lights, Fog Lights and Illumination' so perhaps this may be it, although you did say you checked them all but it does cover all of you problems you seem to be having. You are after F36, which should be a 10A fuse and it is located in one of the fuse boxes next to the battery.
Hopefully that is the problem you have got, just a blown fuse.

Someone else had this problem a while back too although their just went: http://www.almeraownersclub.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=7176&highlight=dash+lights+fuse

Hi All.

Firstly thank you all for your help.

Today I set about removing the dash to sort this problem, But still convinced it was a fuse I decided to pull them all physically out and test with a multi-meter (I had done this with all the lighting fuses already, and had visually inspected what I deemed unrelated) And.. The fuse cunningly labelled as “Washwipe” (10a) had blown. I replaced it.. problem solved. So I am guessing that the fuse order varies on Almera’s and at some point in its life this car has had the fuse box lid replaced.

More for information and perhaps to help others installing after market stereos in Almera’s, Here’s how all this started;

I purchased an adapter kit from stock Nissan wiring to ISO. Connected this to the back of the Sony head unit…. And.. Nothing. So I dug out the multi meter and started to play.

The first thing which became apparent was the adapter was wired wrong. The earth was wired to an empty socket on the Nissan plug. With the multi-meter I discovered two wires on the Nissan plug which could be the earth. One red the other grey with a red stripe yet the adapter wired these too “Illumination” and “ATT” . So as the red one was closer to what was definitely ignition power I went with that. And it worked, until my brother turned his lights on… and pop went the fuse.

Tomorrow I intend to attempt to install it again. This time ill follow the advice posted on here and go with my own earth to the chassis… I’m also going to work out exactly what the Nissan wires do.. once I have ill post my findings here. Maybe some use to someone in the future.

Thanks again for all your help.

Dave
