Help needed on timing chain Almera 03 1.5S

Hi
I am a newbie. My daughter has an Almera 1.5S 2003 which she has had since 2004. It has been a problem lately with the eml and P0335 fault showing crankshaft sensor circuit error; car is difficult to start and conks out on the road. If I clear the error it runs beautifully until the next day or sooner. I bought a new sensor off ebay. First swapped it with the camshaft sensor but no cure. Refitted the old one and swapped the crankshaft sensor. It chunted around while it learnt the new parameters and then ran well with instant starts. Until the next day when I had to tow my daughter home:(
I have read enough to know that the sensor might be faulty but if a replacement or swap doesn't cure it then it is probably a stretched timing chain. Thought I would buy a kit off ebay and there my problems began. If before you buy the full kit with sprockets you ask the supplier if it will fit your car and provide the Registration, chassis number and engine number they reply 'Does it have VVT or not?' They said ask your main agent!
Looked in the drivers handbook but it doesn't say.
Today I went into my main Nissan agents ready with the same details. Reception said 'It wont be VVT as all Almeras have the same engine, VVT is only on recent cars.' On the way back to the car I thought he didn't ask for the year, so called in their service area and asked a mechanic. He didn't know and went away with the numbers to check on the computer. Came back and said some have VVT but he couldn't tell if mine had. He suggested doing what I had already tried which was to remove the rocker cover. I couldn't get it off! I have removed the coils and 4 bolts off front and rear, 1 off the OS and 2 off the top OS. I have removed the camshaft sensor. I even took off the cable clip on the NS in case there was anything under it as it has the barrel shape for a bolt and would match the NS. I can lever the OS up and it rises about 3mm. It is stuck only at the NS. There are 2 location dowels by the bolts at the NS corners but I can't lever it off.
I am afraid to apply too much force as I have had alloy parts break on other engines.....
Sorry for the long post but needs must! Could someone please advise??

Is there not a cover on the side you can remove to inspect the chain tensioner. If it sticks out more than 1cm the chain has stretched. As for the rocker cover, if all the bolts are definitely out, including the solenoid then it really should just prize off. Pictures say a thousand words, get some up.

Hi Simcard
There is a cover but I have postponed more dismantling because I want first to order the kit and need the top off to know which I need!
I have pictures showing the bolts removed. I see no more and cant see a solenoid.

Is there a bolt underneath that breather on the top right? Without being cruel, if you can't get a rocker cover off, this job is well beyond you. The lucky thing is no solenoid suggests no VVT.

No offense taken: I have done timing belts , not chains, on Fiat Multiplas, Metros, Maestros and Peugeots, none of which had VVT. Don't usually get stuck at the rocker cover:)
There is no bolt under the breather on the right but there is of course a solenoid at the OS left (in pic 4). So that means it is VVT? If so why the hxxx didn't the Nissan mechanic say that.... The solenoid isn't at the end which is stuck. I still think it might just be the 2 location pins/dowels at the right (pics 3 and 6) - just need reassurance from someone who has done the job on an Almera before I lever it away

Having done a bit of reading on VVT I can answer my own question and have ordered the parts.
Will wait to hear from someone about the location dowels being seized before levering

One final question. The full FAI TCK32VVT kit costs close to £230 on ebay. Is there a good reason why I shouldn't use the reduced kit TCK32WO 'WithOut' the sprockets which cost £70?
