Help needed please.

Just wondering how hard expensive, big a job etc it is to fit a new air bag in car. I had front end smash which is fixable but main concern expense wise is fixing steering wheel air bag and sensor at front if there is one.

Also is anyone here driving a car which they have had a front end crash with and air bag set off and has managed to fix it to make it road worthy.

Many thanks guys. I'm so pi55ed of right now. i'll post some pics tomo.Help needed please

usualy the most expensive part of repairing a damaged car is the airbag (sometimes need to replace part of dash or steering wheel, the airbag sensors and the airbag itself). from what iv done only some airbag ecu's are re-usable also so a new one of them mite be needed also.

Which airbag(s) went off?

if its an n15 almera mine is still instact and hasnt gone off, i dont know if you can simply post them though?

Thanks for the replies guys. Its the n15 sri car and the driver side air bag has popped out. Got told by recovery guy air bag is not too bad to fit. Does anyone know where abouts this air bag sensor is in the engine bay please? many thanks

sorry to tell you mate but that look's fucked! i don't think you should be lookin for an airbag, you need a new car

take it you hit a lampost?

The airbag control unit is in the centre console, this a Yaw type sensor and will need replacing. Also both the front sealt belts will need replace as well.
The driver side air bag and maybe the spiral cable between the steering wheel and the column.
There is no engine bay sensor, it all works from the Airbag control unit.

thaught this was the case unlucky :(

sod replacing seat belts, if they still work that is. just get an aftermarket steering wheel as the airbag light being on aint an mot failure, 4 years and its still on lol

o well mine havent after it was crashed, still works as a normal belt etc.

This is what happened, i was driving around 50-55 on nat speed limit road(road wet but not logged). Some thing darted out in front of me so i swearved (wish i hit the thing now) lost back end, tried correcting and before i know it i've hit the wooden electric pilon  . That snaps off sending it to the floor with sparks flying everywhere lighting up the night sky. It looked very pretty :D Honestly tho i did shit myself when it happened. The crash wasn't too bad, it was the electricity dancing around me. Oh well its happened now.

The blokes at recovery yard said its not as bad as it looks! How I don't know. She looks fooked to me. Driver side belt still works but passanger side is jammed so guessing pre tensioner fired there. She starts up ok but there is a whining noise. think this is fan belt as will need new fan etc. Things i think i'll need are:-
-Bumper
-Bonnet
-Driver head light and indicatorl light.
-Fan
-Rejig front end
-Air bag/steering fix (or even atfer market steering wheel as long as mot will be ok)
_Air bag sensor
-passanger seatbelt

The passanger wing is perfect, but tip of driver is slightly bent. easy to straighten out tho.

The question is how much would the above work cost?

Engine 1.6sri only 56K on clock, body work mint other than obvious. Is it worth fixing or just cut losses and move on? she's insured at £1600 and my excess is £350. Thanks for replies guys.

It looks a bit worse than ours was after the Mrs' 'lil bro bumped it.

I needed bonnet, bumper, bumper support, 1 headlight, grill, bonnet catch, horn bracket, washer bottle bracket and slam panel (the indicators were salvageable, but they are now commin loose so I'll be changin them too). Wing was a little bent, but easily repaired as the paint didn't crack.

I got lucky and found a side impact red SRi breaking locally on ebay, so bought bonnet, bumper, bumper support, headlight, grill, bonnet catch, horn bracket and washer bottle bracket off him for about £100, I also got a new slam panel from a scrappies for about £50. I then got a cheapo garage to put it together for £200, but the job as expected wasn't perfect, but wasn't gonna be for that price.

Total cost of parts and labour was about £350, I was quoted less as the garage initially thought it just needed a jig and new bumper/bonnet, but when he stripped it down and examined the true extent of the damage the bill went up an extra £150-200 in parts and labour (welding/painting new slam panel etc). Then the clutch went a month or so later...and I wished I just scrapped the thing initially.

Rough guide for used prices (guesstimates, so don't bother flaming):
P2 Headlights £50
P2 indicators £30 (ebay)
P2 Grill £20
Slam Panel £50
Brackets/Supports £30
Bonnet £50 (I'm sellin a red one for £25, but it needs a respray as its faded)
Bumper £50
Steering wheel £50?

Around £300 plus labour, so I'd guess at least £500 (if you get everything together like I did you'll save a wad of cash).

The important bit...I managed to find the bits in red, and good condition, but if you don't, add an extra £200+ for spraying, which I think will take the costs too high to make it worthwhile.

So to the point, my advice:

1) think what the cars worth in its current state (ie scrap/breaking for parts)

2) think what its worth once repaired (worth a bit less as accident damaged) LESS the repair costs (eg car worth £1k, repairs cost £500 means net value of £500)

If the difference between 1 and 2 above isn't worth the hassle, don't do it, just cut you losses and move on.

i don't think the insurance company will want the work carried with part's from a scrap yard, they will right the car off, nothing stopping you buying it back though

yeh you will have all them cosmetic parts and then you will need new airbag, pre-tensioners, airbag control unit, spiral switch (steering wheel) and maybe some more stuff. If the airbag didnt go off obviously you wont need to replace all the airbag stuff :)

Corbs- I had to claime insurance as i knocked down the wooden power line pilon. So no claim isn't really an option

Well guys, I've looked at the car properly today and I don't think it's worth fixing really as engine has been pushed back and down. too much work to do so not cost effective. Take a look:-

Oh well...shit happens

Main thing is myself and mate came away from that scratch free even tho there may have been hundreds or thousands of watts of electricity dancing around us lol.

Thanks to every one who replied with help.

I'll be back if i find a another mera. Also looking at primera (almera's big bro)

Hey guys what about mantainance? Do the airbags need it? Replacement? I've never crashed that bad but I feel nervous about whether they will work or not if needed (my almera is a 2001 model).

Thanks!
