Hey all,
I recently got a N reg 1995 Nissan Almera Si 1.4, with 44,000 miles on the clock. I thought it would be a good idea to join a Almera Members club as i would need advice soon as im considering engine upgrades. It is currently 87bhp and i am wanting to upgrade to around 120bhp. What would you recommend getting?

Cheers

James

120 is quite an increase for the 1.4 mate the 1.6 sri is only 110 standard. You can do the usual mods, full exhaust, manifold down pipe de-cat, air filter, cams remap and so on which would probably give you 120, but the money you will be spending for a guess a minimum of £1500-£2000 for a 30bhp gain you might as well get a GTi which has better spec car and 143bhp standard.

Yeh i see what you mean. Have an engine transplant? How much could i pick a GTI engine up for? Or would you recommend getting a whole new car?

98bhp i think the 1.6 is as standard.

As for getting nearer 120bhp from your 1.4 you will have to spend quite a bit of money on doing it. May be cheaper to buy a GTi as they are not too much now a days. If you dont have the ability to do the transplant yourself then by the time you get a second hand engine and drop it in then the cost may be getting up a bit. However, I am not sure on the insurance costs when you transplant an engine. You may benefit from slightly cheaper insurance as you would not have the GTi but you would have to ring around and ask a few companies about that.

There are a few people who have done engine transplants here so i am sure they would be able to give you any pointers if you need any help with it. You will probably find them by doing a search on 'transplant' or something similar.

o yeh sorry mate forgot to say :welcome:lol.
GTi's can be pickid up for not much of a grand now. a decent SR20 engine will cost you about £200 and then you have to fit it and get it running right. the gti have better brakes aswell which would be heavily recomended if doing the transplant. Just seems a lot of effort and the only advantage i can see would be the insurance.

ah cool. If i decided not to do an engine transplant, but just get a few parts to boost the power, what would you recommend? and how much bhp do you think it would increase? I think a new exhaust and an air filter would be one of the top priorities. What do you think?

James

The main things you could do is, as you said, better air filter, decat exhaust system, new header for the exhaust. A service too if it is due for one may be good as new spark plugs and oil could make a slight difference if they are getting on a bit. Also take any rubbish in your boot out as excess weight would hamper your power a little. Every little helps anyway .

they would be a good start mate get a decent filter (BCM CDA) and a good manifold (hotshot) with a well made stainless striaght through (2.25" bore) . and you should feel a differance.
just dont expect miricals from a 1.4 people have spent serious money on a gti engine and only got 20-30 break more.

Yeh i suppose its just not worth throwing money into a 1.4. It has had a new oil change last week, but i think i'll have to check the spark plugs soon. Do you know any good websites where i can look more into these parts to get a few quotes. Thanks alot for your advice guys.

Welcome to the club. Not worth modding a 1.4L in my opinion mate when you can get a GTi for about 1000 quid nowadays.I can appreciate insurance/tax/fuel might be an issue but it would be crazy to sink a load of money into it with the exemption of cosmetic mods, stereo etc... :D

Just thought, you could also just have a look through the members rides section as you may get further ideas on what to do from reading what others have done. Try the for sale section on parts first as you may be able to get bits your after from other members on here at a cheaper price.

Suppose it's all down to personal preference really. When I had a 1.4 I loved it to bits and wanted to do as much as possible to it.I just yearned for more power really. :D
Like said,do a search and you will find a lot that you can do with it. :)

Yeh i was considering a chip. What chips would you recommend? 'Rowdy GTI' your car looks AMAZING! fair play. My friend has an nissan primera 2.0 that im allowed the engine out of, and transplant it. Would you guys recommend that? How much is the AOC membership? i would like to become a member.

James

Rowdy was just messing about. The chips you can buy are no good at all. Look at the thread near the top of the General section:
http://www.almeraownersclub.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=3576

Membership is £15 for the year:

With the membership you will get the advantage of money off with some companies for parts, access to locked parts of the forum and the general good feeling of helping contribute a bit to the club with all the help you will gain from the other members here.

The primera 2.0 engine would fit as it is the same engine as the 2.0 engine the almera has it is just the case have having it fitted.

Welcome to AOC!

Expect to pay a lot for engine transplant, if you're down here in the South. I know of one garage that agreed to do it on the premise that we'd did the research on how. Not easy if you have no idea. In the end they said they'd never do it again!

Still there are some garages out there who do specialise in Japanese cars, unfortunately none specifically experienced on Almeraengines more Honda! I suppose its down to how much you're willing to spend on labour.

Hey guys, I've been vague with post, only cos I'm not sure if you can actually place links to companies or not. So obviously I've gone for the cautious option.

There are some out there .... somewhere

Rite ok. I think im gunna get an Air filter and Exhaust first. Once that is done i will see what my opitions are to increase the hp more. I will become a AOC member this week ;)

Thanks for the advice guys
