Hi all, a few N16 Q's ?

first off, thought i'd say hi,
just popped over from the micrasportsclub.
i was a nissan technician for about 4 years, but left in 2002, before i could find out the common faults on the N16.
basically, the wife needs a bigger car so i'm selling my micra, i'm having her micra and looking to buy a N16 1.8 sport+ but could possibly make do with a sport. (what are the differences between the two?)
if you could answer that and the comon faults bit, i'd appreciate it very much. (if you're a friendly bunch, then i may look into paying up;))
thanks in advance:)

Hey welcome to the club

I heard that the N16's may have a faulty ground cable (may come loose) so I grounded the engine in several points. I also blown my gear box but that may be a common fault as people said that while servicing they fill up the gearbox oil to much or something like that.

apart from that no major issues All I can say is I am one happy owner but still prefer the N15 GTi

pretty sure with the gearbox the filling hole is an inch too low causing starvation because you cant really fill it to the level the gearbox actually needs, its something along those lines but i may not be completely accurate with the above.

not sure if theres any other generic problems with them, pretty sure they have a few wiring faults but from memory there quite random, headlights give problems aswell but again i cant remember exact details (search n16 headlights and it should give you the relevant thread), my uncle has a tino which has got a problem with the headlining dropping causing the interior light not to work (doesnt deserve the nissan badge if its doing that after 3 easy years imo), not sure if the n16 has the same problem or it could be a tino fault or just specific to my uncles even.

a search should reveal a few more, i dont know much about the n16s so sorry if the above is useless but at least you know roughly what to search for now to get more detail.

Off the top of my head from what I've picked up here, I may be corrected..

Gearbox on the earliest N16 models (2000/2001?) had a problem with the oil level being too low and many have packed-in around 50,000-70,000 miles. Later gearboxes are a drop-in replacement but Nissan want £1000+ for them. May find them in good nick from a scrappy, though.

Early facelift models (2003/2004?) can have a problem with headlight fittings melting but if I recall correctly this was subject to a recall so can be fixed for free and affected second-hand cars should hopefully have been fixed already.

Other than that just the usual random bugs and problems you get with cars - a little more than Japanese cars but a little less then French cars ;-)

Definately go for the 1.8, though, the 1.5 is adequate but feels irritatingly underpowered at motorway speed, especially driving into wind or up hill. That said, the 2003-on facelift models have a few extra HP squeezed out of them but not enought to make that much difference.

The sport and sport+ probably only have minor trim/equipment differences - if the one you look at has all you want then just go for it, I'd say.

thanks for the heads up people. i also prefer the n15 gti, awsome car, but it's for the wife and she doesn't like the 'estate' look it has about it. tut, women!!!
missed out on a '01 sport+ on ebay sunday, went for £2200 with only 48k on the clock. gutted.

keep oil changes regular as oil degrades and the timing chain stretches costs a lot to change

well, we got an almera sport+ '00 with 58k , fnsh for £2400. picking it up next week. quite chuffed with it really. except it's a 5dr,but it'll help when the time comes to sell.

the differences between the sport and sport+ are onlt cosmetic like colour coded bumpers and cd player instead of tape player. the rest is the same just to let you know!! :P

the sport+ also came with 16" multi spoke alloys rather than the 15" 5spoke ones

as sum1 said its cosmetic like colour coding and cd player
