Hi All

New to the site now proud owner of 2004 1.8 SI Tino. At present have just changed oil to semi synthetic 15/40 against advice from H******S who say I need 5/30 yeah right are we in the Arctic? Apparently they cannot recommend any other type of oil contrary to my service booklet which states thinner oils are only recommended for very cold or slower driving conditions. Having said that the last oils I regularly used were SGCD spec in the 90s. Doubtless it's all moved along apace as it were. Wow I even treated the bus to 750ml of slick 50 too. How kind am I!

Engine has done 68k but am a tad concerned about all of these reports of cam chain stretching and sensor issues. I don't think mine has had regular full services for a year or two.

So far it starts well and I can get 42mpg but then I am a tightwad with a very light foot.. As an Ex Spannerman I do detect a faint hint of fluffiness at low revs though. I am told that the plugs and oil were changed 5k ago but that's hearsay and I feel happier going through the bus bit by bit myself. Although I have not picked up spanners since I built my Hotrod Model T in 2004. So I am well out of touch with the new vehicles.

I certainly have had nowt to do with fuel injection or DOHC motors since my motorbiking days around the same time.

Yeah I know bit long winded so i'll cut to the chase, any chance it could be a carbon deposit on an injector. If so any recommended additive to use. Normally I would choose Redex but that has probably been superceeded by now.

Doubtless there are far more up to date folk here so if anybody would care to offer sensible suggestions and tips of any kind I would be in their debt so to speak.

BTW Just wondered if anybody has used those Bosch QUAD TIP sparkies that are available these days? Supposedly they help with combustion but with a high comp engine unless it's well worn I wonder if there would be any benefit. H******S want £28 but I guess thay can be found cheaper. Never been a fan of C******N N10YCs which I think are recommended. I'd rather use NDs they don't melt electrodes..
Anyhoo HELLO to All from Nemp.

Oh PS Can somebody point me in the direction of an article at CM Magazine whatever that may be as apparently there is a Cam sensor adjustment that can be effected by elongating the holes in the sensor and moving it to accomodate for chain stretch. I will find this interesting to read if I can find it, being technically minded. I used to do similar with worn dizzies on old cars when backlash became so bad that static timing was useless. I may need it at some time if reports are true. I intend to keep my Tino as long as I can realistically do so.
Cheers.

Welcome, Quite a first post!

The 1.8 you have is much less likely to develop chain stretch than the 1.5, but its always good to keep on top of servicing. Unless you are experiencing problems I wouldn't worry, and 42 mpg seems fine.

As for plugs, the Bosch Super 4's had been known to play havoc with SR20 (2.0l) engines, I would stick to NGK's.

Thanks for the reply Hally that information is reassuring thank you very much. Best stick to NGKs then.

interesting post i as have recently picked up a Tino with very high mileage and no provenance regarding service history, was worried about the timing chain when my engine light came on recently but it turned out to be a cat failure....

have normally serviced all my 2/3 wheeled stuff myself so looking forward to trying it out on the new car.

seem to be able to get good parts cheap enough on ebay and just waiting for a filter kit to turn up and a clear weekend.

will take your hint on the oil and plugs.
