Hi and Help!

Hi,

New to these forums. I bought a Nissan Almera 1.5 in January 2008 from a dealership - 3 years old, 12k on clock, one elderly previous owner. My 3 main reasons for buying the car were reliability, reliability and reliability.

It's been back to the dealership around 10 times with faults in as many months.

The latest problem is a high pitched scream it emits when the engine is warm - either in traffic jams or when u switch the engine on or off). This started in June at 17k on clock and the dealership diagnosed and replaced a faulty water pump. 3 months later (at 20k) the exact same whine started again and I've just been called by the dealership who say its very strange but the water pump has gone again. I just don't buy this at all, every mechanic I've spoken to states a water pump should last far longer than this, yet the dealership are insisting it's just bad luck - unfortunately the warranty runs out in January 2009 and I'd bet anything in a few months this issue will re-emerge.

The screaming noise only occurs when the engine is fuilly warmed up and when you start/switch engine off or when in traffic jams. I've read the almeras are prone to stretched timer chains/tensioners - could this be related as when I got the car I tried to reject it because the rev counter was all over the place and was told "this is normal with almeras".

Can anyone shed any light on this ? This has to be the single worst and most stressful purchase I've ever made, but I'm sure I've just been unlucky and there's a single underlying cause here...

I work in a garage, shit happens mate. The last thing the garage wants is for you to keep coming back. Perhaps there's a bent pulley on the waterpump causing increased wear. Hence why its not lasting very long.

Someone else might be able to answer this but is the waterpump on the 1.5's driven by aux belt or the chain?
