Hi everyone (my gearbox is goosed?)

Hi all

Bill here from Durham.

Pleased to meet you all.

I bought a 51 1.5e for the 150 mile commute to Leeds every day. On the whole it does the job acceptably, bit under powered but gets me there every day without any drama.

Bought originally as a workhorse as I expected to cash in on the legendary Nissan reliability, and enjoy trouble free motoring. I've put 12k leisurely miles on it since September but now the dreaded gearbox gremilins have raised their head with 67k on the clock .

Symptoms are a whine at constant speed, gruffness when accelerating and loud rumble type noises when decelerating.

I suppose its replacement gearbox time and there's no quick fix? Is it worth checking the gearbox oil level and topping up in the hope it will silence it, or as I suspect to bite the bullet and go through the pain of locating and getting a new gearbox fitted.

Advice anyone?

Many thanks

BillG

it could be the case where you still have an early box.... the filler plugs were too low on these (design flaw) gearbox will implode in time, has happened to a few members on here.

if it wont let you open then here you go!

-----------------------

Basically thoguht i since we do it every day etc we may be able to help a few of the N16 lot out!

We all know the common issues with the gearbox on them.

SOOOO...

i have had a word with my boss etc and struck up a deal with him to get a nice discount etc.

offering both sets of service to either repair or replacement box's.

Both options will come with guarentee receipt etc

now. the gritty bit about prices.

obviously a repair is alot cheaper!

so ..

REPAIR:

you will get 6 month/ miles guarentee.

the price for this service would cost £200 + delivery costs if you are not able to get them to us by yourself!
we get gearbox's for all sorts up to the size of camper vans etc and the maximum cost has been no more than £30
obviously better if you sort this yourself. but we can help if needs be.

REPLACEMENT box

On a replacement box this is more expensive obviously

this is pretty simple

you get a 12 month/12k miles guarentee (aslong as it not a fitment caused issue)
again full receipt etc.
same on this regarding delivery if you cant get this to us!
Price for a replacement box is £480..

Well the gearbox finally went pop and the driveshaft puched through the casing ouch.

I got that sorted and the next problem has now raised it's ugly head.

I temporarily swapped batteries, the plan being to run up the charge on my other cars battery. That was flat so I tried jump starting the car to no avail, so put my good battery back in but now I find my guages don't work - no speedo, rev counter, water temp or fuel gauge. The warning lights work (charge\oil) as do all other electrics, just no gauges or digital display, which is registering all the eights!

I've tried disconnecting/reconnecting the battery, and chacked all the fuses without success.

Anyone have any suggestions?

so does the car fire up?

this may seem a stupid question but is the battery defiitely on the right way round?

Sounds like one of the main fuses in the engine bay, but being an N16 I have no idea which one. I had a similar issue on my N15 and it turned out to be the 75A main fuse, no gauges at all until I started the car, revved it and the alternator kicked in and they came to life.

what gauges do you mean ? do you mean speed or ?

if it is speed then check the speed sensor you can get to it without taking out anything it is similar to where this gearbox is (back near the bulk head where the 2 drive shafts slot into the diff) below the coolant hoses that go into the car. make sure this is plugged in if not change it for another one. if its not that then you might have the wrong gearbox as people are selling K11 01/02 micra gearbox's as Almera gearboxes ones. (im not sure if its K11 or K12 but I know they are selling Micra gearbox's as almera ones.

Those in the engine bay (to the side of the battery) and those behind the pull down cover below the drivers side air vent.

Pulling the fuse marked as meters causes the digital display to stop displaying.

Only thing I didn't check were the 15A fuses behind the bug cover as these were marked as lights, wipers etc.

Worth a try I guess - watch this space.

I mean all gauges are not working ie no speedo, no tacho, no fuel, and no water temp gauge.

No clock - which is part of the digital display, and the digital display has reset to all number eights.

The engine maagement light has come on too, but that no doubt is to be expected with the above issues.

No gauges working at all - ie no speedo, no tacho, no fuel gauge and no coolant temperature. Digital display has reset to all eights and does not respond to pushing the reset buttons.

All warning lights work that are inset in the speedo, charge, door open etc, the low fuel light is on (1/2 tank !!) and the engine management light has just come on. That no doubt is related to this issue so not a worry at the moment.

I took it for a run out this afternoon and everything is fine except that the aforementioned gauges are not working.
