hi from me and my n16

hi im a new member on here, well i may have been a member for weeks but ive been waiting for some confirmation or somthing that i am now a paying member. only found out a few minutes ago after emailing the club about it lol.

anyway im sure loads of people come in here and say the same thing but im looking for more power. i have an n16 sport and i love the car but its just not fast enough atm. can any1 give me some clues were to look so i can power up my 1.8?

hi darren
thanks for the advice matey but i just a little ahead of ya
ive fitted a k&n 57i induction to my car, ive lowered it using just springs from spax and i have had a custom catback system made and fitted by mij performance. oh and ive had some 17inch momo wrs alloys and toyo tyres from www.alloywheels.com there based in rochford, good thing about there site is you get a pic of a mero and you can get an idea what the wheels will look like on your car (they deliver in post to)

anywayz back to my point lol.....
i want to take it to the next level now and get some real power, i was thinking about maybe fitting an altogether different, more powerfull engine. or is this blasphemy??

Hi there Almizmo howz things and welcome to the AOC - nice to see the N16 numbers cropping back up now!

The answer to your question of fitting another engine is yes you can... You've realistically got two choices for an engine transplant you can either install the 2.0i SR20DE engine found in the N15 GTi Almera's and the Primera P11's - and its the Primera's engine you want because ideally you want the engine, gearbox and driveshafts and seen as how the PCD (Pitch Circle Diamter) of both the P11 Primera's and N16 Almera's Driveshafts are the same it means you don't have to fanny about getting 2 new front wheels...

The other alternative is sourcing a 2.5i QR25DE from an X-Trail... Sounds like a weird choice however there is logic to it - if you've already read my N16 Tuning Guide then you'll already got a brief on the US equivalent Nissan Sentra - keeping it short, they have a "GTi" version called the SE-R Spec V which is a 2.5i engine producing 170hp-ish through a close ratio 6 speed manual gearbox with a built-in LSD (Limited Slip Differential)... The obvious downfall here is sourcing the gearbox and driveshafts from the US however you'll certainly have a unique N16 in the UK at least (and it's a route im seriously considering as the abundance of performance parts available from there is unreal)

Before you toy with the idea of an engine transplant i suggest perking up your engine a bit more as a lot more power can be had from the 1.8i's standard output of 115hp: -

1) Cold Air Intake (demonstrated on my car below): -

Only hiccup with these beauties is again only available from the US howver if you dont mind paying a small customs charge (which i don't) then your options multiply

2) Lightened Flywheel and Uprated Clutch Combo

Available from the US

3) Fuel Pressure Regulator (or Power Boost Valve as they're commonly known as)

4) ECU Remap - utterly essential if you've already done all of the above to gain the last few ponies out the engine...

The N16's can be tuned well it's just trying to find them and, on some occassions, paying through the nose for them but in the end it's worth it, in my opinion anyways...

Any other questions just ask matey :D

thanks tallpaul, thats the best advise ive had so far for my mera.
if you have any links were i can find the things you stated above i would say that it was the best 16 squid ive ever spent, also you would make your new best friend for life weather you like it or not lol.

and thanks for the offer almera guy but i couldnt part with alma yet, we still have so many miles to clock up together lol

I'm sure their's an ancient proverb that says "one can never have too many friends" lol

And no probs on the links - will have to dig em out first but let me know what ones you wanna get first and tell you how to go about getting them

well with my k&n 57i i got a pipe that scoops the air from under my grill as im driving, doesnt this have the same affect? if not and the power gain is worth the price then ill probaby start there.
otherwise my guess is the flywheel and clutch will give me the best boost in power so id probably go for that first.

ive seen the power boost valve advertiesed for every almera accept the 1.8?

i have to say its the remaping im most exited about, but not sure if im getting my hopes up a bit to much with that?

Lightening the flywheel has shown impressive gains on the 1.5 (see shnakey's motor) so I would imagine would be a decent mod for the 1.8 too.

I don't know if anyone does them over here but perhaps look at sourcing some road/race cams (probably pretty easy to get from the USA Sentra's).

Getting your head skimmed / ported & polished will also show good gains as with any engine.

There are a few turbo kits out there which is another option if money is no object

To confirm your suggestion of camshafts Stevo, there aren't any off the shelf solutions.

I've been on the B15 Sentra forums and Jim Wolf Technologies said "we'll make them but only if we got 100 orders" so 115 orders were confirmed, people had money waiting then.......... Nothing!

So if you do go down the route of camshafts send an email to either Piper Cams or Kent Cams and see if they'll either make a one off OR possibly fabricate a set for a group buy etc

Newman cams should be able to produce some 'regrinds' if you supply them youre original camshafts along with the correct info they require.

I've always been curious about this - would they regrind or modify the cams you supply i assume then? Also what info would you give them?

Been a bit clueless about timing etc - especially as our N16 engines are chain driven rather than belt driven... Would that matter?

Yes, they use youre original camshafts and create a new profile.

From memory, they require:
The desired cam specs including lift and duration, the combustion chamber design, and the valve to Piston gap @TDC which obviously limits the max 'valve lift'.

EDIT: Note, reprofiles can only be done on chilled Iron cams, hardened steel isnt applicable.
Thats kinda fooks it up, as i reckon our cams are hardened steel.
Nevermind, they will do a custom cams, but its a lot more expensive.

Hello mate, welcome to AOC.

An alternative to turbocharging is supercharging ( if you can speak german and have £3000 spare, that might get you up to 165bhp or so alone)

edit: FYI in case someone is searching for 'supercharger' and finds this post;
I got in touch with the company involved to get more info and they are no longer not making this kit.

Almizmo welcome to the forums, I hope you're getting what you need from it :)

I've just got a quote for a full stainless steel cat-back system from MIJ Performance (the one in Walsall right?) and was wondering how you got on with them, and would you recommend them?
