Hey guys just joined up as I've recently inherited a '98 Almera N15 Equation. It's all-silver (bumpers too) so looks quite nice n tidy.

I'll be keeping the car for a few years but it's horrendeously basic spec wise:

1. No remote central locking
2. No rear speakers/shabby fronts
3. Steelies
4. It's not too nippy
5. I'd like some fog lamps

Just after some advice really:

1. Are those kits off ebay (http://tinyurl.com/ae45c) any good? Anyone tried them? I was thinking this would sort the RCL issue cheaply.

2. Does anyone know what size the standard fittings are? Particularly in the rear? I'm happy to run the wiring to the back as there's nothing there but I don't really want to chop big holes in the back shelf for 6x9"s but would like the biggest possible that fit in the standard spaces. I'd like to swap out the fronts too for some half decent ones too as they're not too hot.

3. Anyone advise on what wheel size to go for if I'm not lowerin the thing? The standard steelies seem really narrow (otherwise I'd probably just leave them on) so I want something with a tad bigger (I think). I think the standard steelies are 14"s? Does anyone know if having 15" Alloys (I'd probably try to find some cheap nissan standard ones) would make much of a difference?

4. Are there any easy performance mods that'll make it a tad faster (but pretty cheap) as I know it's only a 1.4 so I'm not expecting miracles - but I'm sure there's probably a few easy mods I could do to get a bit more power (Air Filter? ECU Reprogramming? Any Ideas?).

5. The fog lamps - does anyone know how easy it is to wire a set in if I buy them? There seems to be space on the standard bumper for them (possibly even mounts I suppose I'll have to double check) but will I be able to connect them up.

Anyone got any other suggestions that I could easily do without going too wild to make it a bit more interesting? I'm gonna keep it probably for about 2 years or so then I'll be getting something with a lot more power ;)

Morning,
And welcome to the club!

There's a wide range of people here, that should be able to help with most of the questions, i'll have a go at at few though to start:

3 - The Almera runs pretty high as standard, so if you're putting new wheels on the car, i definately suggest getting a set of springs to start with. As for the wheels, as long as the actual size of the wheel and tyre is the same as before, you wont notice any difference ( unless you go for much heavier or lighter alloys ). I ran 17" on mine and it was better with them than the standard 15"s as they were light wieght.

4 - Exhaust and air filter is always a good start. I heard taking the cat out of the 1.4 makes a good difference - maybe someone else can comment on that.

Anyways, thats a start for you - sure there will be a few others along soon to help you out too.

1. The DIYGTI kits on e-bay are ok, ive been thinking of investing in a boot popper off them as i no longer have a boot lock :)

And welcome to the almera owners club :D

Welcome fella.

Just a word of advice on the those kits you're looking at on ebay, they're cheap for a reason!

A friend of mine bought an alarm system from the same people. The instructions he got with it were very poor. They had the most basic wiring diagrams and with little info on them. They were also blatanty translated by someone (or something!) with what seemd like a basic language dictionary, i.e not very well. It was still readable though and you could work out what they were saying.

The actual product is ok and works fine after we finally got it all wired up. Its actually got a few clever little things it does.

I wouldn't say don't buy it, and I don't know how good you are with car electronics etc, just don't expect clear instructions i guess.

Hey guys cheers for all the welcomes and info  . A few points/comments on what you've suggested.

Almera_Gti1998:

Cool I'll look into some springs as well. I'll probably go for some standard Nissan 15"s I think as I'm looking to keep costs as low as possible. I just really hate the way the steelies look too I suppose.

I'll probably pick up a 57i Induction Kit as they're cheap enough and seem simple enough to put in.

Not too sure about removin the CAT unless it's gonna make a biggg difference - anyone able to shed any light?

swanny2k / GTiRogue:

Cheers for the info on the DIY Gti kits there. I'm pretty good with car electronics so hopefully shouldn't be too much trouble to fit. I was thinking of getting the Alarm too actually so may do both at the same time.

TIIWEL:

I've not bought anything yet mate - I take it that a set of 6x9's won't fit naturally into the spaces without an adaptor/mount then? Do you have such a thing? I don't want the speakers on display really (last set were stolen out of previous car; once bitten and all that...).

Anyone know anything about fogs and fitting them? I was also considering maybe tryin to find some electric windows for the front from a scrappy, depending on how easy they'll be to put in (if possible!).

*bump*

Just knockin this up to the top of thread in case anyone has any ideas on the other bits and bobs ;)

Cheers.

is it possible to use the central locking already on the car and fit some sort of sensor with the fob ??

I would like to get one of those remote locking kits as I've been quoted ridiculous prices for them!
A spoiler would make it look good mate ;) just so happens I have one for sale... Equations are very basic, yes, but in a way that is a good thing! You can chop and change bits to your hearts delight before standing back and saying 'I did that' - real sense of accomplishment.

A 1.6 engine swap would make it a bit nippier as well!
Let me know about the spoiler mate!

as far as i know you can, i had central locking on vzr before i got it, but no alarm, i got a cobra alarm fitted which disarmed/armed the car and also made the central locking remote (ie works off the fob instead of having to use the key)
