Hi! Really need some help!!

Hi all,

I'm new here but really glad to have found you all!

I'm stuffed! Let me explain in a bit more detail..

I own a 2002 N16 Almera Sport - and love it! However, my stock CD player (Clarion) started playing up so I bought a new facia and ISO lead from eBay. Along with this, I bought a new Sony Bluetooth Headunit!

Easy, you would think? NOPE! If I mount the new head unit onto the existing metal harness, the CD player is at a bad angle - it doesn't fit properly. The unit points upwards a few degrees too much, which means I cannot fit the head unit facia (and thus it looks awful).

I cannot get my head around a way to fix this, and have tried numerous head units all with the same issue.

So I gave up, and attempted to put back in my Clarion head unit - and guess what? When I turn it on a I get a blank display - it lights up and i can hear an untuned radio channel through the speakers, however it doesn't even ask for a radio code!

So now I have no working radio. I could refit a new headunit, however my issue is that there is such a large gap between the front of the unit and the dash facia that lots of light bleeds through.

I cannot be the only one with this problem? Has anyone got any tips? I at first wondered if i'd bought a dodgy facia for the front panel - however I got another from Hellfrauds with exactly the same results.

Those of you with custom head units - what have you done?

Is there any way to get my Clarion working again?

THANKS SO MUCH!

Welcome to the club :)

Silly question but did you try to retune the Clarion after reinstalling? After a while of being disconnected from power they loose their memory.

For the after-market head unit how about using some pliers to bend the metal bracket/frame into position so the unit sits correctly?

I had this issue on my P1 when I installed the kenwood when I used the standard mounting points.

I ended up butchering a cage so it sat not too badly and used blu-tac to stick the facia on as it didn't stick through enough to clip on.

Thanks for all the quick responces guys!

As for retuning - the display lights up but I get no digits or anything on the display. It just seems to be stuck on the lowest FM band (88.something FM) as far as I can tell. The volume buttons do adjust the volume of the "sound" coming out of the speakers, however I just have no display on the unit itself. All of the buttons don't seem to do anything. I would assume it requires a code after being unplugged (I do not have it), however I would also assume it would say "security" or "code" or something!

I could bend it, but would be worried about breaking it / going down a road I cannot return from. I'm shocked not more people have had this issue tbh. The required movement is minor, however even if I get it sitting correctly, the facia that goes around the headunit itself would never fit as the head unit does not point out far enough for it to catch.

I have considered just glueing / taking on the facia, however after a bit of playing I found that if i did that, I could not clip to release the head unit front part, which isn't ideal if I park in a dodgy area :(

So suprised there isn't a simple solution for this one! Would love to hear any further comments and thoughts?

I saw a picture in one of the forums here where someone seems to have used black backing or soemthing to hide the gap. He had already managed to get the unit centered (i assume by bending the metal), and had then found a way to make it look good I guess. He didn't seem to be using the head unit surround either though.

Any did you manage to fit the head unit surround to the front? Or did you just leave a gap around it?

Is it easy to "bend" the metal support thing? Surely it would need to be so precise ...?

I've fitted a couple of HU's to mine (pioneer, Kenwood), neither had a placement problem with the cage but both had a problem where the front panel was too big for the hole in the new fascia, fixed by using a file (OK, a series of files from rough to smooth) to make the hole bigger.

Have you considered drilling new holes in the cage? Would it help?

Well, I think that bending the metal will be the best way to get it to align properly in the space (currently it's just shy of fitting - it's angled very high with a massive gap at the bottom).

I may have to file down the facia :/ eek!

yeah filing the facia is going to be the best option, i only had to file a tiny bit to get it to fit, the outer facia for the radio fit perfectly after that tho. mine is a kenwood radio

Update!

Well, i just attempted to fit my head unit again, and guess what? I noticed that the control stick on the wheel was still effective in changing the radio station. yet most (Except volume and power buttons) didn't work on the head unit itself.

So... i did what most guys would do - I thumped it. 20 times, hard. AND... the display kicked in along with all the buttons... So my stock head unit is a little faulty. probably a slightly dodgy connection I should look at some time!

Great!
