Hi There!

Just thought id come and say hi, I'm relatively new to owning an almera having bought a black 97 GTI in January! I have to say i found it surprisingly nippy!

Not a stranger to owning jap motors having previously owned a 94 impreza & 98 legacy. Decided to give the almera a go due to travelling long distances to and from work. The fuel consumption is alot better on long journeys!

Anyhow, look forward to chatting with you guys.

One quick question is though, do these cars drink alot of oil? i find that i go through a litre about every 2 months. Mind you I am covering about 2k miles a month!

All the best
Ben

Hmm not usual for them to eat oil unless they've been neglected or ragged, 93k isnt that high?

How does it compare to the scoobies?

what the oil consumption or the performance? lol

i certainly wasn't having to put as much oil in the scooby, was putting more in the legacy due to an oil leak lol.

Performance wise, well you can't beat 220bph Awd without some serious modding to these cars, but i'd definately say its quicker off the mark due to weight and low end torque and on the plus side isn't doesn't suffer with turbo lag hehe ;)

Would be surprised if it had been ragged, its not in great shape but i needed a car for the long journeys. What things can i start doing in order to make it less oil hungry? (apart from an engine rebuild lol). I'm planning giving it a good service when i get half a chance, perhaps that might help.

Cheers
Ben

Welcome to the AOC Ben. :)

Is there any blue smoke from the exhaust, or any little drips of oil on the road/drive?

Mine was leaking when I got it, & it turned out to be a loose Oil filter.

Thanks Almera Guy,

I've been searching for a leak under the car but not found any as yet. The inside of the exhaust is looking quite black, but not seen any blue smoke on start up. The engine is really quiet so its not a big or bottom end gone (no knocking, touch wood hehe).

I will check th efilter though, thanks for the suggestion.

Many Thanks
Ben

Welcome mate.

Didn`t someone who was using alot of oil have a faulty valve thing on the cam cover?...tried searching but couldn`t find it.

Yeah, it was the PCV (positive crank ventilation) valve on OxideGTi's motor.

Heres a pic i nabbed from the thread in question:

Cheap fix, cost him £22 (at trade price) from Nissan.

ello n welkom fella.

i brought my GTi from southampton, worth the trip tho for a A+ condition motor.
david

Do us all a favour and just put something along the lines of "my gti iz da bestest condishan motar on teh whole of da AOC blood!" Because if i read one more time how prestine yours is i'm gunna shake my fist at the monitor so hard ;)

Oh and welcome Ben, yeah the pcv valve is the cheapest option to try first. If that doesn't work its likely to be the piston rings.
