Hi there

Just joined - I have a 1996 Almera Gti and was searching the internet about some advice about my car.

I have had my car for about 15 years now.

I would like some advice about a noise that I get at idle revs - almost like a fanbelt noise, but it isn;t that. Is it from something to do with the bearings of the alternator? The noise is a bit like a wailing cat at idle, but stops if I increase the revs to about 2k. It isn't a fanbelt issue as tightening that hasn't made a difference.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Mike.

Get a long screw driver and place it on the alt (away from the pulley) and put your ear on the other end, this should allow you to pin point the noise.

you got air conditioning? does it occur when the a/c kicks in?
No - and it doesn't always happen - it's a bit erratic. When I had the last MOT the mechanic could hear it, but said it wasn't the belt slipping, but probably the alternator.

Welcome to the club mate I'm surprised you've only just came along to here! Haha

Nice to see a long standing owner still enjoying and VERY happy :)

Drove it to the Med and back 4 years ago - my wife reminded me today how I patted it and said well done when we got back! :D

Probably the ALT bearings. Remove the belt, which is simple enough, and see if the noise stops.

OK - thanks for the advice - obviously the noise has stopped at the moment! I am guessing the weather has something to do with the erratic nature of the problem. I'll try the things you have said as soon as it starts again.

Cheers.
