How do I separate ABS sensor electrical connectors?

I've a 1999 (N15) Almera, and have an ABS light issue. From the self diagnostics, the front left sensor is the one generating the error codes (25 & 26). I want to firstly take the sensor out to clean it, but suspect that it may not resolve the issue, and will probably have to take the sensor and cable out to test it with a multimeter and possibly replace it altogether.

I see the cable comes up into the area under the bonnet and there is a connector. I didn't have a great deal of light to really see it well tonight, but it puzzled me just how I am supposed to get the thing separated. Am not sure if there is a tab to press in or something to lift up before the two halves will come apart. Can anyone give me a clue or even have a photo to hand of each half so I might work it out for myself?

There is the possibility that rust is squeezing the cable and giving a false error. I believe @wraith had this issue. So he may be able to shed more light on a solution.

It's reporting both open and short in the circuit, unlikely that would be the wiring as it would be one or the other.

Chances are the metal surrounding the sensor has corroded and is crushing the sensor.

They are next to impossible to get out without destroying. It's been done but it got a round of applause.

Best bet is to get a new one off eBay (about £70), clean out the hole it goes in and fit it.

I got my local garage to do it as other stuff needed done too. Not sure about the connector but it's usually a case of pushing in the (horribly stiff and fiddly) catch and pulling.
