How light can you make a GTI? (Track)

For track use. Needs to be road legal but not daily drive.

If they weigh in at 1100kg stock. Im guessing you could push to 900kg with the right weight removal. Not going silly, but sensible.

I.e. :-

No interior, dash carpets etc.
Inner metalwork removed (non supportive, behind interior panels etc.

etc etc really.

So lets say 900kg, at 140bhp. SO thats around 150bhp per ton. Which isnt too bad. (im thinking part time cheap track car here)

Any other suggestions for almera gti on track use?

Only other thing ticking in my mind is using a primera....

Can pick up a bog 2.0 SE or whatever for few hundred - SR20 included too. Ive heard their suspension setup is a little more advanced than the almera's... So could be a better track option...

More weight but better round the bends?

Dont really want to go with the normal boring golf gti/pug/clio etc But the thought had entered my mind....

Your thoughts/findings? Would really like to hear from someone with track experience.

Thanks.

A few do track days on here in thier meras...so im sure they will have advice for you

Remember its going to be 10x as loud inside if you have an exhaust system

Maybe some light weight alloys, lightened flywheel and light weight bucket seat will help

Other things like carbon fiber bonnet etc, but that gets expensive

Ok, cool.

Also after tips on making them handle.

I love the chassis on these and im sure with the right select bits they can be make superb on track.

check out Rowdys hes probably got the most extensive weight saving on the forum

look at rowdys weight saving thread thats a good start then if your serious.. boot floor can be cut out.. fuel tank can be romved and a smaller one put in place in the rear.. gutt the rear bumper its a parachte so cut most of it out can be replaced with a diffuser of ebay..

complete ABS removal ll sensors and wiring loom.. whilst your there you can cut the standard loom down to virtually noting..

I used Rowdys as a basis for weight saving on my red track GTI, i havnt gone quite as far as him yet but reckon Iv shaved at least 80kg so far:D. Car is much noisier inside with interior removed as boltholes lead to outside, but after I plugged these it reduced but while wearing a helmet you dont notice or care:lol:
I ran it last Monday in Mondello afternoon session and had a laugh ,I seen another blue GTI in the morning...anyone here??......anyway the car proved well capable even with only basic mods and kept up with bigger competition . Car ran sweet all day , temp gauge was hardly above halfway altho I destroyed my brake pads towards the end.... I usually run a modded STI trackcar with my bro but I honestly had just as much fun in the GTI :D

I think rowdy was the only person to do it scientifically, weighing every item he removed, most people just chuck it all out!

Or you could just get a mate with a stock GTi and yourself with the stripped to perfection car and weigh them difference being how big a pat on the back you deserve... dont need to anally weigh each item

No members ride thread Andy? Get one started lets see your machine :)

Yeah i really should take some pics lol, i've just got my JDM rear plate surround in the post, i'll fit that and then take some pics, watch this space ;)

A fully loaded GTi will weigh more than 1100kg ( book is 1120 iirc ).......that figure didn`t ring true with me, the amount i chucked out and the final weigh in.

Mine is down to 974kg with the fuel light on. i`d say with CF bonnet and polycarb windows 930-940kg.

good man :)

mine has had around 170kg took out of it, not accurate though as there will have been different amounts of fluids in it when i had it on the weighbridge. ive stripped more out of it since then, keep meaning to get it on the bridge again

mine was 1220kg ian, when it was in full road trim with all tools, spare wheel etc and a sum and amp in it

Yeah i agree, the only true way to tell is weigh everything you've stripped out and add it to the final weigh in to get an idea.

ooooooooh god knows mate, probably quite a lot  i was surpised when it weighed in that much. it was 1070kg last time i had it on but ive took a lot more out of it since then, must be close to 1000kg now
