How "noisy" are induction kits......

....in day to driving?

I was always under the impression that induction kits sound great when you are pushing on. However, when you are waltzing along at normal motorway/cruising speed apparently they are still noisy and have a "droning" effect.

Is this true? I'd appreciate it if you guys could share your experiences, as i am currently running a panel filter and i am considering upgrading.

the louder the better :-) shouldnt be driving the car under 4k rpm n e way ;-) lol! people hav different opinions, personally wit my HKS, and the De-cat an the exhaust, the car @ 70-80mph is perfectly drivable, can even hold a conversation wit the people in the back seat lol! with the windows up lol .Its a worthwhile mod, jus for the sound

I've got a Pipercross cone filter and above 4000rpm it does make a nice growl but beneath that it's not really noticable.

My Primera came with some universal cone filter and it was ridiculously loud on WOT and still had quite a drone to it on the motorways.

I took it out though and replaced it with a K&N panel filter, nothing to do with the noise, just to do with that fact it was totally bodged on! Gonna get an Apexi filter when I get some cash!

My induction kit doesn't 'spool up' until I put some throttle down, just general cruising about etc you don't really hear it. It's the noisy exhaust I hear

To me it sounds like you don't want it to rumble on the road :P... If you do...get a cone filter...if you don't want the sound then don't bother uprgading :)

Anyway I LUV teh sound...it makes me feel like an idiot on the road with a 1.4 litre accelerating
The best sound is at 3-4k rpm....or full throttle open, and under 3k it's a lil more loud than stock but nothing annoying...you'll get used to it :D

If I remember correctly my 1.4 mera sounded like an EV...all stock.

louder it is the worse it is ;) go by that.

apexi I never noticed anymore noise

same with the blitz filter.....

more noise = more turbulent air

If you`ve got an aftermarket header/catback, it`s going to drone anyway at motorway speeds, mine does.
I`ve just swapped the trusty drilled airbox and panel filter for a dirty great K+N, which makes the droning a bit more intrusive. (I haven`t tried induction kits with a standard exhaust though.)

You'll hardly notice it IMHO.
Mind you,had a hks induction kit in the civic vti 90'h' a few years back. When you hit the vtec, what a noise:D
BUT,very annoying on the motorway when you go over 90.

Thanks a lot for the responses folks. I'm now convinced that i'm definetely going to buy one and top it off with a cold air feed.

Funnily enough, it was the Apexi in the for sale section that got me thinking. I might just go ahead and buy it if nobody else has one for sale.

I tried mine with a K&N 57i kit & it was bloody awful ! It was annoyingly drony at medium speeds & downright headache inducing at anything above 3.5k rpm. It was also very reluctant to pass 5k rpm - like it was hitting an aerodynamic 'brick wall' - it just wouldn't pull past that at all  So I changed back to the same make panel filter & normal performance was resumed. Pulls cleanly to the red line and no ear-splitting drone :)

Please note though, that this is for an N16 so probably different to your fitment.

N16 1.8 with K&N cone, sebring backbox and middle silencer removed.

Noisy as all holy fuck but I like it most of the time, particularly the deep rumbly drone when downshifting from 4th to 3rd for roundabouts :)

Not noticed any problems through the revs, smoother if anything but no obvious power difference.

Only downside is that when over 5.5k rpm when overtaking Audis it /really/ sounds like you are trying too hard and gets a bit screamy.

* not nearly as harsh and raspy as a 1.6 Civic with a wheelie-bin exhaust.

I got told yesterday that induction kits suck on almeras, confusing this topic which suggests otherwise.

I regularly get driven in a Primera GTp11 with an induction kit though, generally not much noise at all. When floored though it sounds supreme. You can hear a sort of, faint whistle or whine when accelerating slowly at low revs but nothing noticable really. About 4000 revs I think and it growls.

this aint fair - i have had 3 diff inductions kits on mine and ya can barely hear it meh i want noise - does havin a stainless steel pipe instead of standard intake help? oh mine where a K&N, PIPERX, and PiperX off an audi tt and still feck allwith all resonance boxes removed

Well my set-up is similar to Wraith's - Remus backbox, no middle box or resonators, but cat still in place. It has a nice, low burble at idle and a fair rort when you drop a gear, but the induction kit was unbearable & just didn't pull right. I find it very strange that some people's appear to work & others don't. What isn't surprising is that everyone has their own preference for noise . . . . . .
