How the piggin hell do you change the ignition barrel

Well, i got a lockset off a member from here and decided to fit the ignition first however.... how on earth do i remove the old ignition barrel, the heads of the bolts are filled in on the bracket that mounts the barrel to the steering column and i cant see a way to drill them out from there or anyother means so i dont destroy the clamp..

Anyone done this and able to offer a bit of advice, thanks
Dave

when ever i sell an ignition barrel, i sell it on the steering column, its easy to swapover,

generally if not you have to drill out the pin bit and use a bolt to clamp it to yours :D

i prefer the column way TBH

actually.

while on the topic. your changing the ignition barrel and keys.

you changing the ecu?

if not, car wont start. immobiliser say no no.

or swapping the chips might work.

you gotta do something though

to change the barrel you need a punch and hammer..

the bolts are shear bolts they dont do up very tight.. you need to put your punch to the edge of the bolt topangle it so its pointing anti clockwise and give it a few taps with the hammer it should start to move turn it.. after abit it will be easy to turn and you wont need a hammer..

or you can get a jnr hacksaw and put a slice in the end so that you can use a flat head screw driver and just use it as a normal bolt aswell

just done this last weekend on a bmw Z3 Roadster. you may also need to drill out a pin on the underside that stops the barrel sliding out the shaft if your changing that bit!

try not to though :)

O and the bolts are recessed so you cant get a hacksaw onto them to put a slit in :(.... centre punch here i come.... once i figure out how to do the key chip thing

Thanks
Dave

get a blank key cut to the same spec as the new ign lock.. replace the ign lock then tape the old key with its chip onto the top of the black box on top of the ign barrel...

ive done it to more than one almera previously - it just some things are not laid on a plate for you unfortunately.

nice trick done it before myself aswell - does however take away the whole point of having an immobilizer though
