Hello all. Just bought a 97 Almera GTi in red. 80k miles, £800.

Havn't had the chance to get on some twisty fast roads though yet.

Went to do an oil change/ filter change today & saw that the oil filter is inaccessible. Any advice on getting to it?

Thanks

it isn't, it's just bloody hard to get to. I know oil changes are best done with the engine hot but its nigh-on impossible with your hand. Best best is to tap with a hammer and chisel/screwdriver until it loosens, then undo the rest by hand. Probably not the best way but its effective.

It difficult but not impossible. Regular oil/filter changes will make the engine last for a very long time.

use a pry bar to get the filter of, also lift the power steering pot up of its holding bracket and move it towards the the drivers wing a little bit, gives you a bit more room

You get it from underneath with your hand or a chain wrench which works well,do it while it's hot don't be a pussy!!! :D

not on a GTi you dont, on the 1.4 and 1.6 yes, 2.0l NO

Welcome, sounds like you got a good deal there :)
Dam I hate them chain filter wrenches. They slip for fun.If all else fails and you tried a strap wrench, chain etc...Then ram a screwdriver through it and it's sure to come off :D
Not the best method but a last resort ;)

I never had a chain filter wrench slip, buy a proper one.As for a strap wrench you might as well be pulling your micky. If that fails you will get it with a big swan neck pliers.I agree though the screwdriver is last resort,if only cunts put them on properly in the first place!

Well on the vz-r i presume it's in the same place and if it is you do get it from underneath, hot or not!

the 2 lire one is on the righthand side of the engine at the top, never seen a vzr one so wouldnt know

Thanks for all the help. Still havn'tgot round to doing it yet!
Do you find the car runs better on 95 0r high octane fuel?

Thanks
