K n N Induction kit on 1.4 n15

Will have an Almera very soon, most probably 1.4. I've read and heard they sound a little dull standard so was thinking of putting a K n N induction kit on. Just a few enquiries. Wheres the best/cheapest place to buy from and would you say it was worth getting one for a 1.4? Do they provide any BHP gains, no matter how small? And would it effect the insurance a lot would you imagine? Do almeras actually sound nice/better with them?

Cheers.

i got a 2.lt gti and i had a k and n and now have a piper x, sounds good when revd with bonnet up but i cant tell the diff when i drivin it, dont know about power gains, sorry

They do sound good with an induction kit yes, BUT, the K&N 57i kit for the 1.4 doesn't work very well at all, it upsets the cars idle (can also cause it to stall) and also draws in lots of hot air.

It's much better to make your own induction kit that locates the filter behind the battery.

This is one i made for my 1.6

I got the 90* silicone hose off ebay, the 500mm, 70mm tubing from Merlin motorsport and the Green filter from an induction we had lying around at work. I used a drain pipe bracket to secure it, and for what i paid (about £35 - less than a K&N) it works really well.

that sounds like the prob i havin on my car!! check my post in the Help section n15 gti

With the K&N item all the vac lines are properley accounted for.. and with a good cold air feed (which is supplied with the kit) it is absolutely fine..
I wouldn't say it gives any power gains.. but it does add a nice little grunty sound.
Combined with a free flowing exhaust and advanced timing, it does make the car feel a bit more pokey though.

joe what did you do with the airbox vac line?

Put a screw in the end and blocked it off. It's a vac line that opens the EGR under pressure, doesn't affect the running of the engine (or shouldn't) if it's disabled.

But the filter sits on your throttle body roasting. It would be fine on a race track where you're constantly moving yes, but for everyday use in traffic etc it's a pants design. Plus longer induction tubing adds torque IIRC.

i thought that only applied to longer intake manifold branches... but when you say it it sounds right that it would be the whole induction system... snorkell anyone?
