knocking/tapping noise around 3k rpm

hi people.

over the last couple of days my almera gti has developed a loud knocking/tapping noise that starts at about 3k rpm.

its a gti n15 and coming up to 100k miles

is it terminal? any one got a rough cost on repair?
 
helpful lot... maybe you arent psychics, but with most cars you get something that is common, that can be pointed out and looked at, i just dont know where to start as i'm new to almera's
 
Well for a start, knocking and tapping are two different noises. Can it be heard in the car, is it coming from the top or bottom of the engine. Is the oil ok? Does it do it from cold? Etc etc. Just impossible to say what it is without either looking at it or at least hearing it on a video.

Does it make the same noise when the car is idling, or is it only when the car is actually moving?
 
does it when the car is moving (under load) and when just raising the revs to 3k on the driveway, and does it hot cold which ever, will try to get a vid of it
 
it could be anything fella, engine, exhaust or chassis parts, its one of them things that needs looking at as mark said
 
Can you get a video up? We're not trying to be obtuse mate just need as much info as possible with these kind of things.
 
i can try and get a video up tomorrow, not at my comp today, just using my itouch to get on.


and its definately coming from in the engine, have had the plugs out and tried moving the pistons but they seem to be solid,
 
can i get away with with just replacing the bearings? i know i'll have to wait till it comes apart to confirm that, but does any one have a price for them?
