Lazy Caliper

Took my car its MOT today and the tester said the handbrake only just past with 17% and the fail is 16%. The tester said it was due to a lazy caliper, I am guessing the handbrake is only connected to the rear discs. Anyone know how much a new one is from nissans?

id personally just check the seal,

the rear calipers are screw type so you have to twist as you puch it back in.

if you put a set of mole grips around the flexible brake linejust behind the caliper., take the caliper off etc and pump the brake it will push the piston out.

you can see if it lacks push or not. it may be that it is simply needing bleeding. so a full bleed, also check your levels as the N/S/R will have least affect (furthest away) so if it isnt bled properly or is lacking fluid then this can cause the affects too.

could save you the money

but depends on how technical minded you are and if you have the right tools to be able to push the piston back in once you have pushed it out to check it.

Could also be a siezed slidepin, I`ve just stripped my rear brakes down tonight, as the handbrake wouldn`t hold the car on the slightest of inclines & the bottom offside pin was siezed to funk, so the pads weren`t gripping the disc!

WD40, molegrips & a club hammer got it out, then some wet & dry to get all the shite off of it & it`s as good as new now. :D

Dunno how a caliper suddenly needs bleeding ?

Just get a re-con caliper, gti rears are known for failing.

might not just "suddenly" need bleeding

may have been toss since a brake change?

just offering symptoms that may be able to help, since people are asked to use the search buttom offering help of fixing a propblem also helps others aswell as the originator of the thread in a case that this may be the issue with theirs.

its all good just saying replace it, but if you try help someone, i believe thats what makes a car forum, a car forum.

but then u got to get people to use the search feature before simply just makign a new thread, but then in a world were everyone would rather be given things rather than working for them, thats gonna be hard.

send kids back to work at 7 i say!

The brakes was changed before I got the car and the when I got it mot'd last year the hand brake was fine and it has only happened over the last year, will most like get recon units.

surely if it was a lazy calliper the foot brake would suffer aswell? could maybe be handbrake cable sticking? or as said a stuck slider pin? seized pads? or maybe even the rear brakes just needing adjusting? there could be a few things and without having a look i think it would b hard to pin point and say it was deffinately one thing. but watever you do, dont forget to losen off the cable before adjusting the handbrake! :)
