Leaking Steering Pump & Hose on My N16 2004

Hi

So as it turns out I was stupid enough to buy a car with a leaking steering system, now that we cleared that,

This is what the rear part of the steering pump looks like after I wiped it:

the steering gear also shows some signs of leaks, but it appears they are not recent, or are they?

and a view on the lower joint from beneath:

view from the top on the lower joint and you can see a little leak in the area of the pressure sensor:

I bought the car 11 months ago and haven't added any steering fluid in that time:

Is it a common problem?
What should I do in this case?

Only leak i see is either from the top hose to steering pump or from the banjo bolt/washer holding the high pressure hose to the pump.Check that the hoses are ok and make sure the hose clips are tight. If they are then renew the sealing washer next.Unless you find the actual pump is leaking from closer inspection.

If you did need to replace the pump for any reason,it won't effect the rest of the steering gear unless bad to start with.If your fluid level is on Max cold, then it's only a very slow leak, but best you sort it soon. With a bit of luck might just be a hose clip needs tightening a little more.More i think about it,could it just be engine oil leaking onto the pump from somewhere over time ?

No, after I wiped it down I started following the leak, the high pressure hose is leaking red fluid (Dex III ?) a little every day, the engine is dry.

If the pump is leaking, where does it usualy come out of?

Suppose I replace the hose and fix the pump, would it kill the steering gear?
I doubt the pump itself is leaking. More than likely being dripped on.
How will replacing those parts kill the steering gear?
If this is your only problem with your n16 count yourself lucky. Now add some stop leak & check again in another 12 mths.

I suspect the previous owner added some stop leak,
I found someone who makes high pressure hoses for ~110$ instead of ~335$, any takes on non-OEM hoses?

What other problems should I expect from a 10 y/o N16?

If the pump was leaking,it could leak from the pulley shaft area, but as Ian says, unlikely the pump itself, replace the high pressure hose and fit a new sealing washer at the same time or it will leak again.Non oem hose should be fine, just won't last as long as a OEM hose.

As for adding stop leak stuff, that's your choice, but if some's already been added and it's still leaking, what good it going to do.

Both are common probs, The search button and Google are your friend.

I did, and from what I gatherd the 1.5 l engine suffers from timing problems,
mine is a 1.8 l, and the local forums know nothing of timing problems with it, nor with the cross member.

So I cleaned the area everyday for a week, just to realize how right you were, the vacum hose was dripping on the high pressure hose and pump.

So my mechanic just fit another band-ring-tight-thingy and there is no leak as of two weeks ago.
But, there is a squeaky sound coming from the area, I've tightened the belt pulley but it came back after a week, any Ideas?
