Right, ive stripped out the rear of my GTi and I know all about the weight saving etc but im not happy with the way the back doesnt blend with the front!

I mean from the back of the front seats back over is blue metal and bolts, and infront of them is nothin but leather effect black plastic and comfort, so i reckon if i stick the rear 'door' cards back in (weight is negligable) and get somewhere to make me a huge bit of nice quality (and quite durable) black carpety stuff it'd look alot nicer, and the weight wouldnt be compromised.

So is there anyone (particularly in the northeast) who knows where i could contact? im sure i could do it myself with a roll of carpet but i'd want the edges finished with that stitching stuff round the edge of carmats, or else it'd just look scruffy imo

Sorry for the long thread!

actually the more i think about this the easier it would be to do it myself, im changing my question! to: any ideas what to do about the edges? carmats normally have that beading/stitching round the edge and i dunno how to reproduce this on a bit of carpet?

if i was you i would get some sort of ribbon or a strip of material that will fold over the edge of the cotton and roughly sew it, then do it properly as it will already be held in place and should be easier to sew. i dont think a normal sewing machine would work though as most people only ever sew thin things so i wouldnt expect a sewing machine to be made to sew something as thick as a carpet, may have to do it yourself or get someone else to do it.

the edges of the mat are usually bound, which can be done by any carpet shop, so I suggest going and having words with any regular carpet shop as they could probably supply the carpet and bind it.... not got a clue on the cost tho.

try these people mate :-

Went to Walter Wall's today and got a black remnant (1.5' x 4') for £9

Cut it to size and just slid it in for now while i work out what to do with the edges! Pics below:

I think it looks alot better, and it's weight is negligable
