loss of acceleration?

engine was running fine on sat night but had foot flat to floor and no acceleration,left it over night and revs up fine now,anyone know what the problem was/is??
 
dodgy alternator? would mean the battery wasnt being charged and this causes similar problems. or were you in 5th doing 15mph?
