Lowering advice

was wondering if anyone is able to help me??!! ive got an almera N15 1.4si and was thinking about lowering it. only around 35-40mm... would i have to replace everything, i.e springs, shocks... or can i just change the springs?
has anyone else had this done to theirs??? and does anyone have any idea on fully fitted price??? that would be a great help!!! thanks. :)

Lowest you can go is 35mm, just on springs. About £100 for springs, then whatever to fit them. Don't need anything else though.

yer as kurt said springs around around £100, i think the Pi ones are £105 from http://www.performancecentre.co.uk/p/sv_m.asp?VT=1&WU=CP01&LC=ENG . to lower it you only need the springs but its recomended you do the dampers aswell, most people dont and im just going to do the springs and if the dampers go then change them when its needed.

as for a fully fitted price, it would probably be quite high really simply because it would be quite time consuming but if your reasonably skilled you should be able to do yourself, to get the spring + damper off the car looks easy enough and then it shouldnt be difficult once there off, worth paying though if your not confident yourself

any pictures of your car btw? always nice to see new members cars :)

thanks guys!!! i cant get a pictures on but if you go to www.myspace.com/danshieber, then click on 'pics', scroll down and theres a picture of it there! its very similar to yours actually. same colour, got the gti wheels and si spoiler put on after i got it, and ive just recently had a new backbox fitted by powerflow, just the box though. its needs lowerinf though as you can see in the pic cause it looks like a monster truck!!! lol. where did you get yout front grill from?? it looks awsome!! ive still got the standard one with the nissan badge in the middle! cheers dudes.

thanks for the friendly welcome!! i was meant to say above that my car looks similar to members 'sprint', so you dont get confused!! i'll have a look at them springs then!! thanks!

wow there like twins :lol:

got lucky with my grill and found one over here but usually you have to get them from australia, from memory the seller hasnt got any left though, shiny_blue on here if you want to PM him just incase but im pretty sure there all gone.

how much was the back box? any pictures of that? need to get one for mine soon, just got a crappy little trim for now that was there when i bought it

i havent got any pics right now im affraid, it cost 100 quid for the box, its a 'Rage' backbox, 4" diameter(exit), then it cost 35 to fit it, looks and sounds great!!! i'll try find me one of them grills, cheers anyway!! do you have to be a payed member to put pictures and stuff on here then??

you do to upload on to the site and have an avatar and signature (i think) but if you want to upload pictures to threads you can use photobucket.com etc without being a member. well worth joining though, plenty of advice on here and it would be nice to see more of the indentical twin :lol:

if you just put springs on it accelerates the wear on the dampers and gives you a very spongy ride, it does the job though

i wouldn't start playing with suspension unless you know what you are doing and have the right tools, the springs are under alot of tension and can be very dangerous. fitting at a garage should be no more than 4 hrs labour £100-£150 max.

get the haynes manual from halfords and it tells you how to springs in there.
you need:
* spring clamps
* 17mm, 14mm, 12mm spanner and sockets
* breaker bar (the two bolts on the lower of the front strut and the one bolt on the lower of the rear strut are torqued up alot)
* wd40

Took me about half a day to do the fronts when I had my first SRi (same colour as yours). The backs are more time consuming as you have to remove the rear seats - which isnt hard, if you have a cordless screwdriver.

oh right, cheers for that. i think i might get a garage to do it just to be on the safe side!!! so if it wears the dampers, would it be a good idea to get new ones of them aswell? cause my car is pretty old and i dunno when they were last changed. if so, does anyone know the price of dampers???

youd be as well changing the shocks at the same time. the best thing to do is get a matched lowering spring and shock set (shock is shorter as well) but there doesnt seem to be any available for the almera n15.
considering you're car is older, then lowering springs will wear out the old shocks quickly.
http://www.buypartsby.com sell shocks, they may not list them on the site but KYB Excel G's are a good replacement, similar performance to GTi shocks I'd imagine, as mine has them on the back.

exactly, depends on how you drive and how much you drive i think about a year would be a fair assumption, but the handling will be deteriorating all the time and it will be like drivin on very bouncy jelly, unsettling the car around corners. by the time you have bought the springs and then in time replace the dampers and two sets of labour you could have spent a bit more initialy and got coilover's with even better handling in the first place and less hastle.

thats provided you intend on keeping the car for a few years or i have just rambled on for feek all :lol:

a LOT more, for a much harsher, lower, uncomfortable ride.

Springs and shocks will do for normal to spirited road use
