Midsection / Backbox joint

Anybody got any tips for how to get a good seal on this joint? Did mine last weekend with loads of gasket sealant but it's blowing already. It would help if I could get the towbar out of the way because where it's pushing down on the backbox it's putting pressure on the joint, but is there a gasket I can get or anything?

holts firegum. never failed me.

phill ill post that downpipe next week yeah? im off work. send me y0000000 address in pm ~INNIT. y0.

On my Si after fiddling with several back boxes and getting them re-fitted etc after a few days there was always a slight blowing sound coming from somewhere. We gave up in the end and came to the conclusion that it might have been from the manifold.

The only helpful thing I can suggest right now is you might be using the right method of putting the exhaust sealant on but your exhaust hangers may be worn after years of use and causing slight movement of the exhaust under hard driving causing the paste to split!

Tommo: Will do, tell me how much you want for postage. Cheers x

Steve: It's definitely coming from the midsection / backbox joint. I think you might be right to an extent, but the fact I've still got the bloody tow bar fitted means it's pushing down on the backbox, which could well also be causing it to split.

I'm gonna have another fiddle about this weekend, hopefully I'll be able to cure it. Cheers guys :D

high temp silicone works better, stays flexible were as gumgum etc set hard, then as soon as any pressure is on it they crack instead of flexing.

my downpipe to de cat joint was a complete pain, did it first when both parts were brand new with gaskets, lasted a few days, so tried gumgum several times and never lasted more than a few days, then when powerflow did the system i got them to re do it, they used silicone and its still good know, about a year on.

I might make an effort to get the towbar off this weekend then, don't want that to happen lol. Btw backbox is nice and deep, I was worried it would be raspy and intrusive but I could quite happily listen to it on the motorway all day lol.

I found when coupled with my GA16 it was deep at low revs but aggressive and raspy at redline with the decat in :)
With the SR20 it sounded very raspy, pretty amazing to be honest!

decats and centre box removal are what usually creates the rasp, i managed t get rid of my rasp with the silenced janspeed decat but then i got a rasp with the manifold fitted but i accepted that as its a performance rasp lol

s for the joints ive always used hylomar gasket sealant, stays flexible like silcone, smells nice too, highhhhhhhh

OK So after refitting the backbox yesterday using Holts Firegum, it's started blowing again less than 24 hours in. And it's really pissing me off. Does anybody have a gasket / have gasket paper / know where to get them?

As already mentioned, you need to use silicone. I personally gaurantee you it wont blow.

That's why I bought this stuff, because it's stays flexible. Would I have to do it again using just regular silicone? Andy said you can use card as a gasket, anyone else done this before?
