misfiring - Camshaft sensor?

Hi there, I'm new, so hello!

I've been having trouble with an erratic misfire/hesitation on my 2001 Almera 1.8 Sport. I've changed the plugs, and checked the coils. The diagnostic came back with a random misfire (i knew that already!). I thinkl the next step is to get hold of a camshaft sensor to see if that helps... but where is it? I don't have a manual and I'm not a mechanic. Also does anyone know if there is any difference between a sensor from a 1.5 or 1.8? There are a few breaking on ebay. Reading other posts i guess it could be the timing chain? If it is, I'll have to just bin the car cos that will be too expensive. I really don't want to though, cos i love the car.

Hope you can help

Thanks

ok, I've found the sensor - just need to know if the sensor is the same type for all engine types; 1.8, 1.5, diesel etc. Thanks!
Some of the ones on ebay look slightly different

Ok thanks, I've now freed the rusty screws holding the rocker cover on so I can take look. Is there a gasket that need replacing? Can you explain what to look for. People have said a 10mm Protrusion but is it obvious? Thanks

If it helps, my tensioner was at the limit of it's travel (about 20mm) so it was quite obvious. When the rocker cover alone is removed, it isn't as clear to see the tensioner (peer down the well with a torch!) as when you remove the top chain cover as well but this needs resealing with RTV when put back.

My symptoms were erratic/jumpy running when cold and stalling from time to time. Classic chain stretch I'm told.

Mine is now in a state of teardown and ordering the new chain and bits Monday. I also found the source of an oil leak - cracked lower timing cover which will defo need replacing.

This job is certainly doable if you are handy with spanners etc but I can't believe the amount of stuff that needs to be removed/moved to get at a timing chain.

Good luck
A.

I'm no mechanic but it sounds like something I might attempt. I'll try to take a good look tomorrow but will I need a new gasket for the rocker cover do you think?
Thanks for your help

Yes, get a new rocker cover gasket and a tube of RTV. FYI, I found the timing chain kit at Redmans Engines for 135.00 delivered but worthwhile phoning them with your vehicle details to ensure you get the right kit, that is if you need to replace the chain!

Thanks... I'm just going to take a look initially to see the tensioner's position, and then carry on driving it until I change the chain (if i need to!). Will I be able to re-use the new gasket when i come to do the repair though?

You do - pic attached.

yep, it's definitely the tensioner... mine was protruding about 20mm too, although i was able to see mine quite easily, peering in from the driver's side of the engine. When you bought your kit, did you get the sprockets with it?

It came with standard sprockets (i.e. not the VVT sprocket) but I didn't use them. I only changed the crank sprocket which also cam with the kit. I would have preferred to have changed the cam sprockets but the VVT would have almost doubled the cost.

If I find I have to do the chain again at least I know how to do it!
