MOT

My MOT is not due untill Sept but was wondering if i went for a MOT now and it failed would i need 2 get it fixed there and then or could i wait untill its due in Sept?

i would assume with the new computerised system, you would need to fix it, os it's be on the system as failed, whereas before you could just bin the fail certificate!

not sure though, i've wondered about this before.

actually, you could get a pre-test, to see what's wrong, i don't think that would matter, then you have til september to sort it.

my brothers mini failed, went in on the same day as it ran out so i asked them if i could keep driving it til midnight, was told that was fine as was basically using what was left of the old MOT, went past a few police cars and didnt get stopped etc so must have still been ok on ANPR.

why would you want to put it in now though? if it doesnt run out til september?

If you put a car in for an MOT before the "13 month" date...i hope you know what I mean?...then if it fails the MOT is still valid untill it runs out. However, if you put a car in for an MOT and it fails, whether its valid or not, you'll be wanting to get whatever's wrong with it fixed.

I assume you want to MOT it early to put a full year on it for selling maybe?

I think you will find that if you are aware of anything that makes your car not road worthy then you will be breaking the law if you drive it. Therefore if you take for an MOT and it brings up any roadworthy problems......
Don't forget however, even if you are unaware of any non roadworthy conditions your car is in, if you have an accident or get pulled and the car checked over, ignorance is no excuse, you can still be prosecuted.

how can that be? surely if you've got your MOT and are unaware, you've done your bit? otherwise people would be driving illegally all the time?

unless it's something obvious like tyres, lights etc.

Get it pre-MOT'd and that will show up what it might fail on then you have plenty plenty time to sort the problems.

The MOT is not a certificate of road worthiness except at the time of the test.
The driver is responsible for making sure the car is roadworthy at all times. Okay you probably wont get done if one of your lights has just gone off (although technically you can), but say youve been driving with bald tyres, they didnt just happen, same with defective brakes, generally you are expected to get them checked sufficiently so that you dont sufddenly find youre metal to metal on pads or shoes.
But original point stands, if your car fails MOT at anytime it can be then proven that you knew about it if you drive afterwards. Also dont forget if your car fails the MOT miserably, in other words it is dangerous to drive, forget about the "allowed procedure" to drive a vehicle home after a test, if you get caught you can be done for it.

yeh i s'pose that stuff is obviously needed, tyres etc. I was thinkin more hidden stuff - but then you'll be unlikely to get pulled and checked for hidden stuff at the roadside!

It's unlikely that the average traffic cop is going to climb under the car and check the brake pipes etc, BUT if you check the small print (Ha!!) in your insurance documents it may well say something like "you must keep your vehicle in a roadworthy condition at all times" which can give them an argument not to payout if you're in an accident - so you'd be uninsured as well, more fines!!
Likelyhood of anything going wrong if you have something minor wrong (like typical MOT failures) is very low, we just need to be aware of what can happen and then when we take the risk so to speak, we decide ourselves if its worth it; I'm not condoning driving a dangerous vehicle understand, to do that then its being a mug that deserves anything that happens, I'd be more worried about the damage done to anyone else.

The amount of VOSA roadside inspections is on the up and they do climb all over your motor.

Ever heard of a thing called MAINTENANCE?!

Just pulled out my MoT form this morning as I'm going 'under the knife' on Monday. It says the earliest you can put it in for an MoT is a month before the existing one expires.
Probably the easiest thing to do though is ring a testing station and ask them?

You'll find that the MOT cert states " to preserve the anniversary of the expiry date the earliest you can ....etc" in other words if you put in before this date it's like a new MOT from that date, if you put in after the date on the MOT they still give you 12 months from the date of expiry of your old certificate. You can still put in for an MOT on any date, even on a car less than 3 years old if you want to, they'll take your money and give you a 12 month certificate if it passes, as above, only prob is if they pick up any think that indicates your car is not roadworthy, then legally you cant take it on the road.

I believe that if an MOT testing station finds a car in dangerous condition & it fails the test, they have the power to make sure you don't drive away & cause an accident on the public road. You can trailer it away, but not drive it (faulty brakes, steering, etc.).
