My n15 gti won't get up to temperature.

My n15 struggles to get up to temperature since I've had it. It will get there if I leave it idle, as soon a you go somewhere and it gets some air cools down to quarter of the way on he gauge. The radiator pipes also don't feel hot when it's up to temperature. I have taken the thermostat out and tested it, works perfectly fine. It's had fresh coolant put in, I am wondering if the mix is right but I'm not sure if that would make a big difference. Could anyone help me with this situation?

Thanks

are u sure its not the gauge?happened me with a gt starlet. try putting the heaters on full blast when the needle is low if u get hot air it might be the gauges when its warmed up.

Mines done exactly this for near on 3 years now its fine in the summer only a problem in winter lol I have been putting cardboard over half of the rad for the last two winters which helps a tiny bit but not a lot tbh

My daily runner is like that, forever waiting to get up to temp and over cooling, carboard is my friend lol

I've recently turned to Jesus in the hope that a new thermostat will solve the same problem Saturday, as cardboard was a false god. :(

Had this two winters ago. New thermostat should fix it. A quarter on that temp gauge is like 40 degrees so people get them changed lol

Im not the only 1 then, cheers guys.

problem is i dont think its even getting hot enough for the stat to open, and ive seen my stat opens and closes perfect. i think ill turn to cardboard and and get my heater sorted out so that i dont have to have it on full for it to work, thats taking all the heat from my engine when its on. Ill also plug it into the computer to see what temperature the sensor is actually reading to make sure the gauge is working properly. Anyone know where the OBD socket is?

My stat opened fine but the seal on the valve had perished and crumbled away allowing water to bypass the valve as if it was hot and open.

Mine did this also, i replaced it but tbh i think some of the sealant i used has gotten into the seal and wedged it slightly open so it cant close etc

Sealant isn't hard until it goes off so it would've just been squashed when you put the thermostat on, if anything making a better seal.

I did think that too but I can't think of any other reason why its made no difference :/ ive changed the stat, the temp sensors on the inlet manifold so cant think of any reason else tbh?

Really not sure what the issue is, i think they are just overcooled in the winter. ive now covered up most of my radiator and the car now gets up to temperature and stays there which is great, Doesnt ever get too hot. Might just be something ill have to do every winter.

Wouldn't overcool with the temps we get. If it drops below stat temp, the rad is shut off anyway if the stat is working properly.

Is the gauge accurate? SR20s dont over cool.
Does the heater blow warm? If so, you haven't got a problem, and covering the rad will result in under cooling.

over cool?
