N15 Gearbox

stick with a GTi gearbox, the rest wont fit

if your really desperate then a p11 2.0 gearbox should be a direct fit and i think if you get the GT one then the ratios will be identical, p11-144 use a hydraulic clutch i think so aviod them unless your after a stronger gearbox and dont mind a bit of work, anything p12 wont fit and p10 will fit but im not sure if its just bolt on or if any little changes have to be made

I asked the seller whether this will fit and work on the GTi and he has said it will,
Is he talking out his ass?
Im needing to find a gearbox soon.

thats funny i asked him and he said it was for the GA engines.

would hold out for one from a member if i was you, at least then you know what its come from and can trust what condition the seller tells you its in.

in a related vain, is there anything one can do when rebuilding a gearbox to improve it over the standard one? and any idea how much a rebuild costs?

i would have thought something along the lines of shortening the gear linkages or something like that? short shifter kinda stuff?

Yeah thats all i could think of, although a shortshifter has little/nothing to do with the gearbox itself, as its at the end of the linkages, just thought if you were to rebuild a stock gearbox, would there be anything you could do to improve it while you're in there?

i think shot peening is used widely to improve the strength of standard components, whether this is done as standard on our boxes or not i dont know so that would be something you would need to look into

straight cut gears are meant to increase the strength massively but they are LOUD and if you ever watch someone driving a rally car with one fitted at low speeds they look like a pig to use so for a road car wouldnt be needed anyway

i think after that your looking at a sequential gearbox which is expensive and unless its for a dedicated track car wouldnt be worthwhile. no idea on rebuilding costs but i have seen a DVD which had some things about rebuilding them on it and it doesnt look like a DIY weekend job!

the way i see it is if cars like rowdys which is more powerful than most on here can take track days then for a road car it definately isnt needed, although im sure his car is looked after 10 times better than some so maybe other people will destroy gearboxes with less power and mileage than he will

Yeah good point, speaking from a GA16 point of view the internals seem pretty good up to 170bhp so i assume the gearbox can handle the same, and i like to think i take care of my cars (change the oil every 2krpm for starters) just thought if it was in a garage getting the gbox rebuilt if there was anything i could do to improve it, it would be a bonus!
