N15 Rear Shock HELP

wont need anything more than a set of spring clamps, its also better to replace shocks in pairs..

Sound I can get clamps from my mate and buying two is still cheaper than the £115 the garage wanted for supplying and fitting one.

I got 2 KYB excel G's new for £25ish each I think delivered from buypartsbuy, the rears are much cheaper than the fronts somehow. Dad fitted them for me but looked easy enough.

Aye Ive just got a set from BPB

http://www.buypartsby.co.uk/

Phase 1 95-97
Part Number : 341186
Cost : £23.54 + vat
Price for 2 inc delivery is: £64.13

Phase 2 98-00
Part Number : 341226

Price for 2 inc delivery is: £95.34

Excel G is probably as good as these Bilstein ones

I've just had a look and am I right in thinking that the springs sit loose on the rear?

They don't seem to be attached to actual shock. If that is the case will I be able to disconnect the shocks then the springs will drop loose so I can take them out.

The strut will drop out as a whole. Compress the springs out of the way with spring clamps like said^. I had to remove some strange metal plates in the back of the car too before I could get to the strut.

edit: Thats how it is on an SRi anyway.

Ok. Has anyone done this on a N15 GTi? Just so I have an idea before I start.

Only reason I am being cautious is due to it being my daily car and need to be able to get it done in a single day.

aslong as your careful and dont snap anything no reason you shouldnt have it done in an hour with the correct tools,

I can have a rear strut out now in about 10 mins from loosening the wheel nuts

Use loads of WD40.

He wants people to confirm if what I said applies to the GTi which I think it will. I.e He asked about the shock and spring being separate. They're as one and drop out and you compress the springs back, but he wanted to be sure the GTi was the same. You all seem to have missed the question, lol.

if your spring is seperate from the shock you either have a pretty big problem or a different car all together ha

yes its the same!

iirc its far easier to use a ring spanner on the damper nut and an open ended spanner on the damper rod to prevent it spinning while undoing the lock nut. what size spanner for the lock nut i dont know but for the end of the damper rod i tink its either 8mm or 10mm.

i had problems removing the lower nut holding the shock to the axle. it was really rusty and corroded so i got the angle grinder out and cut it off. Then i just replaced with the correct 12mm high tensile bolts. apart from that the only thing you also need to remove is the two bolts holding the shocker on the rear arch inside the car.
but dont forget to clamp the springs tight or the top cap will come of with a bang and could take your head off!
