Im looking to get a (cheap) CD player headunit tomorrow to mount in my '98.

In the past in my other cars the headunits have not always looked flush, or required a mounting ring around them which looked tacky.

If you could please post photos of your head units installed, along with the model name and number that would be most appreciated. (you can upload your pics real quick at www.putfile.com )

Most standard head units fit nicely cos the position in the dash board is recessed... I recently replaced my head unit with an Alpine CDE 9845 RB.. it looks good and fits well.... the only minus point was trying to get the bolt out from behind the factory fitted radio cassette...
You may need an adaptor cable because the 98 Nissan head unit didn't have the new standardised plug

To get the old unit out of mine (a 1997 Activ with a clarion radio/cassette in) I had to take the front panel off the dash.

Take out the ash tray then take out the two screws above the heater/fan controls and then the whole front bit pulls off. Be careful of the hazard/fog/heater switches at the top - mine were stuck so had to get someone to hold the panel whilst I slotted the unit in behind!

The head unit in mine was then bolted to the dash with two L shape plates that you have to take off the old one (a bit tricky as they hadnt been touched for 7 years and had seized up!).

Its not as difficult as that looks, but it took me ages to figure out how to actually get at the unit, once Id done that it was simple!

If this isnt the same for your car im sure there are other threads on here that explain different models

Good luck!

ps, havent got pics as dont have decent digital camera!

you dont have to bolt the radio back in. from what i see (although i havent done mine this way) you can mount the DIN sized cage into the hole on the center console panel. this way you can easily use the fascia surround that comes with the new radio.
other option is to get a pack of washers and to basically mount the bolts with the washers behind the bracket to make the radio protrude more so that you can clip the fascia surround to it then.

On mine, Its not bolted back in either, just using the DIN cage that came with the head unit... The fascia surround fitted nicely without any need for extra washers...which was a relief..

If you are looking at Halfords why not buy a decent one with their free fitting and let someone else have the headache... I have to admit... thats what I did **Oh the shame**.. I'll try and get a pic of the head unit for ya
