N16 gearboxes

Mine's just gone, from the noise it's the input shaft! Obviously mine has the 1" too low hole.

Which models of N16 didnt have the holes too low? Will the gearboxes be interchangable?

Sorry to hear that mate - I'm just waiting for mine to go.

As far as I know the fault was fixed in later gearboxes - I would expect that a newer replacement wouldn't have the fault and will fit fine but I'd expect not to have such a dumb design flaw in the first place so don't quote me on it.

I'm thinking about having it rebuilt and getting a machine shop to cut a hole in 1" higher and braze up the old hole.

Going to do an all nighter on my sunny and put it on the road tomorrow, no matter how badly bodged it looks!

Is quite annoying really, it's my first day of college holidays and I was on my way back from a ROSPA demo drive when it went, ages away from home!

Think it's just the W and X reg's that are effected by this.

What mileage have you done? Did you ever try overfilling the box?

Saw that when it happened paul.

To be honest, I spent last night til 4.30am getting the sunny ready, just need to re-bleed the clutch and I'm good to go when I tax it tomorrow (insured it earlier...£23 on top of current insurance!)

So while the mera is sat dormant I'm considering putting a different engine in there on Standalone management, that way I can forget the crappy gearbox problem ever happening again!

My gearbox is still going strong *touch wood* after the noise started last September. I'm going to renew the gearbox oil when i can afford it and see if that makes a difference as i read some where that the oil becomes thin over time and the box starts making a whining noise. My car has done about 104000 miles.
